As far as the term वाजसनेय is concerned Panini  follows अव्युत्पत्तिपक्ष - he lists the term in शौनकादिगण -- 

शौनकदिभ्यश्छन्दसि (4-3-106) --  the अधिकार - ’ तेन प्रोक्तम् ’ (4-3-101) is running - णिनिप्रत्यय has to  be added - it should be छन्दस् (वेद) ।

वाजसनेयेन प्रोक्तम् अधीयते वाजसनेयिनः (आप श्रौत 1-8-12 ) |

वाजसनेयस्य इदं वाजसनेयम् - ’ तस्येदम् ’ (4-3-120) -- शैषिकः अण् - वाजसनेयम् - स्वार्थे कप्रत्ययः -- वाजसनेयकम् ।

Another scholar may go by व्युत्पत्तिपक्ष - it will not be amiss ,

In the vyutpatti paksha can गोत्रचरणाद्वुञ् (4.3.126) play it's part ? . Also in the first place how does "vAji" become "vAjasani" from which the rest is derived..Please enlighten me.

The suffix घञ् is added to the root वज and we have वाज which means अन्न। वाजमन्नं सनोतीति वाजसनिः after adding the उणादि प्रत्यय इन् by the उणादि सूत्र 'सर्वधातुभ्य इन्' (4.118). The root is षणु दाने of तनादिगण। वाजसनि means 'the sun'. आदित्याज्जायते वृष्टिर्वृष्टेरन्नं ततः प्रजेति वाजसनिः सूर्यः। वाजस्य अन्नस्य सनिर्दानमिति वाजसनिः। वाजसनेः सूर्यस्य छात्रः = वाजसनि + ढक् = वाजसनेयः। कन् प्रत्यय is added to show that which relates to वाजसनेय and we have वाजसनेयकः। To arrive at this form I have consulted वाचस्पत्यम्, अमरकोष, धातुपाठ, सिद्धान्तकौमुदी and still I have to find out the aphorism which prescribes the ढक् suffix suffix after वाजसनि।
