Respected learned people,

It is "big news" for the "Sanskrit family" on Wednesday Govt. of India approved three Sanskrit universities as central universities Viz. Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan and Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (LBSRSV) in Delhi and the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (RSV) in Tirupati.

The government is expected to bring the Central Sanskrit University Bill during the ongoing winter session of Parliament. If and when the Bill is passed, the three deemed-to-be universities will be the country’s first Central universities for Sanskrit. Currently, there are Central universities for Hindi, English and Urdu each.

After their conversion, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan will be known as Central Sanskrit University, SLBSRSV will become Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University and RSV will be National Sanskrit University.

According to ministry sources, the proposal has been justified on a few grounds. First, that Central university status will improve the stature of the three institutions. Subsequently, this will help them attract more and better faculty and foreign students. After conversion, the government expects these Central universities to also start offering programmes in Indian Philosophy and yoga.

While LBSRSV was set up in 1962, the Sansthan dates back to 1970 and RSV came up in 1961. All three were granted deemed university status by the UGC later. Apart from being among the first Central universities for Sanskrit in the country, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan will be the first multi-campus Central university. It has a head office in Delhi where the vice-chancellor sits and 12 campuses across the country.

Respected sir,

It is really one among great universities. It is "deserved" to get a Central University status. It has tremendous manuscripts collection. but its not accessible to many scholars.

"NAMAMI" (National Mission for Manuscripts) must take it as initiative and make the great resource accessible "at-least for Indian scholars". Then every scholar realize the value of the university. Once the value known by everyone, then obviously everybody recommends to the MHRD to recognize as Central University.

We also need to thankful "whole heatedly" to the people who were behind the screen and kept great efforts make these universities as Central Universities.

With best regards

There are 40 Central Universities under the purview of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, created under the Act of Parliament. Out of them 16 new Central Universities have been established w.e.f 15.1.2009 in hitherto uncovered States (except Goa), by an ordinance promulgated by the president of India. The ordinance has since been replaced by an Act of parliament, namely, Central Universities Act, 2009 which has been assented to by the president of India on 20th March, 2009. While 38 of these are getting maintenance and development grants by the Central Government through the UGC, IGNOU, New Delhi is funded directly by the Ministry of HRD.

  • President of India is the Visitor of all Central Universities

  • President/Visitor nominates some members to the executive Committee/ Board of Management/Court/Selection Committees of the University as per the provisions made in the relevant University Act.

  • President as Visitor also exercises powers in respect of amendments, additions and repeal of status; suspension and disallowance of Ordinances; ordering enquiries into the affairs of the Universities; and resolution of disputes between Selection Committees and the executive Councils.

  • Ministry provides secretariat service for appointment of Vice-Chancellor, Visitor’s nominee on the Executive Committees, Courts, Selection Committees by the Visitor and also examines each matter that comes up for Visitor’s consideration and orders.

Yes sir. I agree with you. I thought to mention this point. These deemed to be universities are already under MHRD. But it is not with in the case of Sampurnanada Sanskrit University.

Thank you for your time.

Now that these universities are getting a higher status,
they must also brace up to shoulder bigger responsibilities.

Their top priority agenda could be:
to prepare an army of manuscriptologists, well-trained and well-paid,
in order to publish the lakhs of manuscripts lying unpublished
but yes, with strict quality control.
