Here is a set of verses composed for Narasimha Jayanti. The first two verses are dedicated to Ganesha and Kuladevata, Mallari. The third verse is based on the Narasimha Anushtup Mantra, extolled in the Narasimha Tapini Upanishad. The fourth verse is in the form of obeisance to the pAdapadma of Shri Narasimha, set in Vasantatilaka meter. Verses 5-10 contain ideas drawn from the Upanishads. Verse 11, set in shArdUlavikrIdita meter, is a short description of the kApAlika episode, where a kApalika intent on offering Shankara Bhagavatpada in a human sacrifice is killed by Shri Nrsimha. The remaining verses 12-15 are in praise of Nrsimha and regarding the importance of reciting his names. Verse 13, set in upendravajrA meter, is a variant of one of my favorite verses in the Nrsimha Sahasra Nama.

Prof. Paturi,

There is a Mallari Mahatmya book which contains various stotras, sahasranamas, and a detailed account of the Mallari incarnation of Shiva written along the lines of Devi Mahatmya. There is a practice among people, whose family deity is Mallari/Khandoba, to read this Mahatmya during the first six days of the Margashirsha month, culminating on the Champa Shashthi. Most people that I know, however, read a Marathi version or the Kannada version. The Sanskrit version is used in the Mallari Homa, again along the lines of the Chandi Homa, which is conducted in a large scale in places such as Devaragudda, Karnataka. These places draw huge crowds every year and the festival really reinforces the faith that people have in Mallari. In Maharashtra the place to visit is Jejuri, where the deity is called Khandoba. Devaragudda, the name often used in Malatisha or Malatesha.

Dear Anand and Prof.Paturi,

A very good, pleasant and simple but effective poetic composition.Congrats for this enterprise.pl.continue this endeavour and get punya.

There is one very rare work still in a manuscript form deposited in the collection of the Oriental Institute,Baroda. It is named Mallari or Malharimahatmya and it has a Sanskrit commentary by one Shri Kalamkar.I forgot his first name, but,am sure that still this ms.is not printed by any scholar, because, Mallari or Malhari is a typically Maharashtrian and Kannada God not much known outside these places/ states.

It will be better if anybody works on bringing out its Edition or Critical Edition based on other MSS.deposited in different Libraries.

Some youngster can/ should work for his/ her Ph.D. on this rare but important text.It would be my pleasure to help him/ her if it is needed.

Best luck in your search and research on this rare text.

Sir,

Thank you. I had not heard of any commentary on the Malhari Mahatmya. I will try to find it.

Anand

There is a Mallari performance in Nadaswaram.  Is it related to the deity Mallari by any way?

What is a Mallari?

Like the tradition during the temple rituals, there also prevailed a special pattern for temple processions, the most important being the rendition of Mallari. During processions, whenever Deeparadhana was performed, the Nadaswaram and the Tavil played as an ensemble - a rendering based on Tillana in raga Gambheeranata. This is called Mallari. This practise continues even today.

Each performance weaves a unique type of Mallari. During the Siva Tandava (the frezied dance of Lord Siva), his anklets gave rise to the Jati-s, "Tha dhi Tom Nam". This formed the basis of jatis for several percussion instruments like Mridangam. Further sounds emanating while striking the two hands on the mridangam produced "Dhim Dhim, Tham Tham". This forms the basis of the Mallari presentation, wherein the performer intertwines the Alarippu and the special jatis of the Tavil, "Kunda kundagu - Diruta Kundagu", to the raga Gambheeranata.

Subsequent to the detailed presentation of Gambheeranata, the other Ghana Pancha ragas, namely, Nata, Gowla, Arabhi, Varali and Sriragam are played. Todi is also rendered. The five types of Mallari are:

Teertha Mallari - while the Tirumanjanam is brought

Taligai Mallari - while the Naivedyam is brought

Kumbha Mallari - while giving the Poornakumbham

Taer Mallari - when the deity is taken up for procession

Purapattu Mallari - when the procession of the deity starts

One significant Mallari is Triputa tala Mallari, based on seven beats either as "Takita takadhimi" (3 + 4) or "Takadhimi takita" (4 + 3).

The Taer Mallari which has 5 beats is repeatedly handled on the procession days. No other Mallari is handled during the procession day.

Except a few like Triputa Mallari and Taer Mallari, Taligai and other Mallaris do not have any specific tala structure (beats). These would depend on the performer's creativity.

>   Mallari or Malhari is a typically Maharashtrian and Kannada God not much known outside these places/ states.

----- This deity is worshiped by the shepherd caste called as Dhangar in Maharashtra, Kuruba in Karnataka and southern Andhra Pradesh and Kuruma in Telangana. In Kannada and Telugu , he is also called as Mallanna. Mailari is the other name of this devata. In Maharashtra typically the word Khandoba is prevalent. Biroba is the caste origin hero (the first shepherd) worshiped as another devata by this caste Dhangar. Biroba is called Beerappa in Kannada and Telugu.

The caste and cult have been studied extensively by the late Prof. Gunther Sonthiemer

in his book " Pastoral Deities in Western India

I studied the Telugu counterpart of it in the Raayalaseema (southern Andhra Pradesh) and Telangana for decades.
