Welcome to the IKS Podcast Series by the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) Research Centre for Mathematical, Physical and Astronomical Sciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi Campus.

In this episode, we are honoured to host Prof. M. D. Srinivas (Padma Shri awardee), Former Prof. of Theoretical Physics, University of Madras, and Chairman of the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS), Chennai.

This episode explores the rich scientific traditions of India, the conceptual foundations of Indian mathematics and astronomy, the methodology of Indian sciences, and the continuing relevance of India's civilizational knowledge systems in contemporary scientific inquiry. Prof. Srinivas also shares valuable insights into the Kerala School of Mathematics, the Indian tradition of Upapattis (demonstrative proofs), and the philosophical foundations that distinguish Indian scientific thought.

It was in the absence of an assertion and explication of the conceptual foundations of Indian mathematics and astronomy
that David Pingree and his followers could speak rather dismissively of the Indian contributions to the two fields.
Apart from a deep knowledge of the two domains, Dr. Srinivas' sound knowledge of Sanskrit has enabled him
to explore this uncharted territory, and for which all Indians should be grateful to him.

The reward for great tasks accomplished is greater tasks, they say.
The day should not be far off when MDS would accomplish, if not surpass,
what Joseph Needham did for the Chinese contribution to science:
a multi-volume survey - in 7 volumes (=22 books).

It is unfortunate that Wikipedia has no entry as yet on MDS.

(Just to end with a personal note, Padmashri Srinivas was my senior
by two years in The National College, Basavanagudi, Bangalore.)

The host started the podcast with a question on PPST foundation started by Prof MD Srinivas along with a few others. I , as a student at UoH was introduced to it by Prof  Kulkarni  of the Philosophy department during 1986-87. We were looking up to all the founders of PPST foundation for our future plans in academics.

It is good that the podcast did not have long interventions in the name of questions.that usually happens.

This is a good primer for those interested in learning about India's Scientific Heritage.

Thank you Prof MDS.
