Respected scholars,
In some language, could be Tamil/Telugu/Kannada/Sanskrit, Kishkindha denotes a congested place. Kishkindhaa of Valmiki  made up of caves could have been a congested place. Scholars could throw some light on how this word acquired this meaning.
Thanks and Regards

The word is not easily explained.

Some kindred themes and issues are:
kiṣku is a unit of length, given as 12 aṅgula-s.
The word occurs in Amara-kośa.

kiṣkindhā is explained etymologically as
kiṁ kiṁ na dadhāti ? =
full of wonderments.

More info/discussions are of course needed.

Some years ago an elderly lady who visited our very old residential complex remarked in Kannada seeing the narrow staircase: this is verily kishkindha.

Thanks to Dr.Kannan and Dr. Subrahmanian for their inputs. I was not sure that it is a Kannada word as I have not seen it used in written Kannada.

पाणिनि puts the term किष्किन्धा in पारस्करादिगण --

Patanjali in third अध्याय  clearly says that all रूढिशब्दs have to be produced by offering some प्रक्रिया or the other . There is no any specific prescribed procedure .
किष्किन्धा is just a name of a गुहा । It may be the name of a town or something where the गुहा is situated and that is due to उपचार ।
No other meaning should be assigned .
Since it is a संज्ञा it should not be translated . In parenthesis one may offer a यौगिकार्थ / derivative meaning or an exploded view of the term .
