Namaste !

Could anybody give me the link for downloading the first edition (1896), reprint 1996, of Kerala Panineeyam (കേരളപാണിനീയം) by A.R. Raja Raja Varma ?

Thanks and regards
Narayan Prasad

Extract from the English Introduction of P.K. Narayana Pillai, p.xxvii (2nd edition 1917):

Though it professes only to be a second edition, a superficial reader may fail to discover much ground common to both the editions. To all appearance the present edition with the alternations and additions, amounts to what one may call an ‘allotrophic modification’ of the original work”.

“I feel a sort of personal loss in the omission of the Sutras which proved such a delight to me to tackle and to master.

Namaste !
लघुपाणिनीयम् is a work on Sanskrit grammar, whereas Kerala Panineeyam (കേരളപാണിനീയം) deals with Malayalam grammar. Regards. Narayan Prasad.

Sir,

In such cases, it would be helpful if you mention these details too in the initial post. Please note that those who read your query need to get an exact idea of what you are looking for, without which they can't really help you.

Dear Sir,
    namaste !
The link you have given is for the 2nd edition.
I have a xerox copy of the 1st edition. But it is very faint and is not properly readable.
The first edition is a Malayalam grammar in the sUtra style, whereas the 2nd one is in the kArikA style.
For a better idea of the first edition attached are a few scanned excerpts from this book.
The first sUtra states what is varNNam.
The 2nd sUtra defines what is svaram.
The 3rd sUtra defines what is vyanjanam.
     Regards

Sir,
Thank you so much for the information.
This 1896 edition book is very valuable and hence it should be preserved as a soft copy with good resolution.
I don't know whether the reprint edition of 1996 has preserved its paginations or not, because I have not been able yet to see the first edition.

In the online version of its 2nd edition the English Introduction of Narayana Pillai has been removed, I don't know why. Maybe, due to his remarks at the end which I have already quoted in my initial message.

   Best regards
   Narayan Prasad

Sir,

English translation of Kerala Paniniyam is available at the link given below. I am also not sure whether the translation is based on the first edition or not. But, as I wrote earlier, it contains the introduction by Narayana Pillai.

Sir,
Thanks a lot for the link. This translation is based on the 2nd edition.
I recollect having been informed of this English translation about 12 years ago. But I had not seen this book.
For those who are used to the Paninian style of grammar, the first edition will be more interesting.
For a recent work "A GRAMMAR OF MALAYALAM" by Dr Ravi Sankar S Nair may be downloaded from here:

    Thanks and regards

Dear Prof Prasad:
Some link, I found a few days ago says it is online at

This link appears to be belonging to CDAC; and has been showing at the corner as "Under Maintenance"; hence not sure about its health.

But the address etc at the bottom of the page is as below:

Email : l...@cdac.in, con...@malayalabhasha.in

Phone : 0471-2723333 (230), 0471-2720913

Address : LTS, C-DAC, Vellayambalam Thiruvananthapuram, 695033.

Looks like it is in your "neighbourhood".  You may check whether they have the copy (hard or soft) copy, which presumably was available on their website.

I found on this page http://kurta.org.in/8407-2/   the biography of Prof Puthusseri Ramachandran (Founder President, Keral Univ Retd Teachers' Assn). Among his writings is a critique with original 1st edn {" Kerala Panineeyam (Reprint of the first edition of Malayalam grammar with critical introduction) (1989)" }.

You may be able to lay hands on this book.

Best wishes & Regards:

:chander

Grammaticography of Kēraḷa Pāṇiṉīyam: from the art of description to the science of explanation

by P Sreekumar

The grammar of a language generally prescribes or describes the essential and the observable system of the language. The art and craft of writing and the scientific studies on grammar is known as grammaticography. For a decade, grammaticography has been emerging as a major field in linguistics (Lehmann and Maslova 2004; Ameka, Dench et al. 2006; Payne and Weber 2006; Nordhoff 2012). Reflecting upon the new trends in grammaticography, an attempt has been made in this paper to review the grammaticography of Malayalam based on Kēraḷa Pāṇiṉīyam (henceforth KP). KP is the longstanding...

Thank you, sir, for this link. Earlier also you have given a general link and I did browse through that.

From this article:

<<At the end of this century up to 95% of the world’s languages will be moribund or extinct (Krauss 1992: 4-10, Crystal 2000, Nettle & Romaine 2000, Whalen 2012: 155-173).>>

References are from two different centuries. Hopefully, "this century" means 21st century. I have not checked what Krauss (1992) and others have said.

Best regards
Narayan Prasad
