Recitation of the Vedas.

Dear Scholars,

Is the Phalashruti फलश्रुति of the Vedas in the meaning or in the recitation?  Patanjali in his Mahabhashya says that one recitation of the Maheshwar Sutras is eqivalent to one recitation of the Vedas.  Thus one will naturally ask as to what is the main purpose of recitation of the Vedas.

To Sri Phani B -ji: The reference is in the Marathi commentary to Patanjali's Mahabhashya sentences.

To Sri Achut-ji:

The Marathi commentator is neatly giving all the steps involved in the process of learning Maheshwara sutras leading to the phala of reciting the Vedas.

He says,it is the saadhus'abdajnaana resulting from the maaheshwara sootraant shabdajnaana (vyaakaraNajnaana) that leads to the puNyaphala equivalent in amount to the puNyaphala of recitation of Veda.

That said, these expressions of equivalent in puNyaphala never actually mean what they appear to say in words. It is just to instruct /motivate people towards tings like  maaheshwara sootraant shabdajnaana (vyaakaraNajnaana) that they mention these equivalences, not to instruct to give up the 'equivalent' actions.

It seems, English translation of Mahabhashya are not available in the open domain. Translations by KV Abhyankar and that of SD Joshi & Roodbergen are still under copyright.

There is one translation by P S Sastry - some of the volumes are available online. I heard of a recent English translation from Puducherry. Then there is a Marathi translation as well. Remember some of these sentences being read out in one of the classes.
