Understanding term त्र्यंबक

Respected scholars,

mahaadevashaastri joshi in bhaaratiiya samsk^iti kosha explains the term त्र्यंबक as follows:

त्र्यंबक  is derived from (meaning) पिता, this which means त्र्यंबक was son of three fathers.

He further states पृथ्वी, आकाश and द्यू  refers to them as being the पितृस्थान for अग्नि.

For some reason folks forgot this meaning of  त्र्यंबक and the  लौकिक meaning of अंब got established as eyes.

Any elaboration this would be appreciated.

Yes, even I have heard schollars deriving a Vaoshnava Paraka meaning of Tryambaka, where the meaning of Amba is Mata as in the one with 3 mothers. Vishnu had 3 mothers? I don't know exactly, but this is what I have heard.

And this is the Vigraha Vakya intended: त्रयाणां ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवनाम् (गुणावताराणाम्) अम्बकः पिता (अवतारिपुरुष इत्यर्थः) इति त्र्यम्बकः।।

I have heard that Vaishnav Schollars have believed Tryambaka to mean the Ultimate Supreme Person, the one who takes the GuNAvatAras.

It can be Shivaparaka as well, the one having 3 eyes.

VAchaspatyam dictionary has given many etymologies:

त्र्यम्बक¦ न॰ त्रीणि अम्बकानि नयनान्यस्य, त्रयाणांलोकानां अम्बकः पितेति वा, त्रीन् वेदान् अम्धतेशब्दायते वा अवि--शब्दे ओष्ठ्योपधः कर्मण्यण्संज्ञायाषिति कः त्रिषु लोकेषु कालेषु वा अम्बः[Page3397-a+ 38] शब्दो वेदलक्षणो यस्येति वा, अम्बनम् अम्बः शब्दः। त्रयोऽकारोकारमकाराः अम्बाः शब्दाः प्रतिपादकाःवाचका वा अस्येति वा, त्रीणि पृथिव्यन्तरीक्षद्युलो-काख्यानि अम्बकानि स्थानानि यस्येति वा।

One has to be on a farm to understand this.

A ripe cucumber falls off with even a gentle tap to the stalk.
An unripe on, will not come off without a fight and maybe with a knife.

So the prayer is that when at death I have to go, may I go like a ripe cucumber, without pains of separating from the bond of this world. Let the separation be painless.

सायण says as:

त्रयाणां ब्रह्मविष्णुरुद्राणाम् अम्बकं पितरम्  - ie., the father of Brahma, Vishnu & Rudra. 

This mantra bestows good health, longevity and removes the akAla-mrityu dosha.  

Swami Sivananda Saraswathi Ji of Rishikesh used to advice his 
disciples to chant this mantra 108 times during one's birthday.  I have developed this habit of chanting 108 times on my birthday after doing rudrAbhisheka.

Though not directly related to 'trayambaka', for the name 'Keśava'  in the Vishnu Sahasra nama - Shankaracharya, alternatively, has given an etymological meaning: कश्च अश्च ईशश्च त्रिमूर्तयः केशास्ते यद्वशेन वर्तन्ते स केशवः ।    

[Brahmā, Vishnu and Shiva are the trimūrti-s - all of whom are under the control of that entity which is called Keśava.]  

Just as Trayambaka is an entity 'above' the Trimurtis, Keshava too is 'above' the Trimurtis.

this shloka is quoted in some text, I dont remember now.

Could you kindly give the reference to the above passage of Sayanacharya?  In the Taittiriyaka Aranyaka 10-56 where occurs the famous mantra 'त्र्यम्‍बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् उर्वारुकमिव बन्‍धनान् मृत्‍योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ' Sayana gives the meaning of 'trayambakam' as 'trinetram.'

Dear Subbu ji,

Pls refer to the 59th सूक्तं of 7th मण्डलं from ऋग्वेदः .. The Rsi for this sUkta is मैत्रवरुणिः वसिष्ठः .

There are 12 Rks in this sUkta and the 12th (last) Rk is called मृत्युविमोचनी ऋक् ie., a verse which frees the devotee from death.

Pls refer to the sAyaNa bhASya here (vide pg. no. 503)

A fruit when "ripe" drops automatically.
Usually a heavy fruit like a pumpkin gets severed from its creeper upon ripening.

"Ripeness" here refers to completion, fulfilment, nirvana.

Dear Sri Shashi joshi ji, thanks for this info regarding ripe cucumber. This was my understanding as taught from one of my teachers

This also has a special message:

The Rishi is asking God in this mantra to deliver him from samsara, when ripe, meaning when mature enough when he has become ripe with knowledge/jnana. 
In other words, one has to go through this experience here to get maturity step by step and then finally be delivered. This view is very different from a perspective that one needs deliverance right now or in a few years or at the end of this life. Maybe an aspirant could ask for deliverance right away but it may take time for him to get blessed with Jnana.

This verse has a similar tone to "bahUnAm janmanAm ante jnAnavAn"  
Sanskrit Commentary By Sri Shankaracharya

।।7.19।। बहूनां जन्मनां ज्ञानार्थसंस्काराश्रयाणाम् अन्ते समाप्तौ ज्ञानवान्प्राप्तपरिपाकज्ञानः मां वासुदेवं प्रत्यगात्मानं प्रत्यक्षतः प्रपद्यते। कथम् वासुदेवः सर्वम् इति। यः एवं सर्वात्मानं मां नारायणं प्रतिपद्यते सः महात्मा न तत्समः अन्यः अस्ति अधिको वा। अतः सुदुर्लभः मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु इति हि उक्तम्।।आत्मैव सर्वो वासुदेव इत्येवमप्रतिपत्तौ कारणमुच्यते
