Namaskaram,
I hope you are all doing well.
I would like to seek your guidance on a question related to mantra initiation and scriptural authority.
Specifically, I am trying to understand whether individuals traditionally considered outside the varna system (referred to in some texts as Chandala or Panchama) can be formally initiated (upadesha) into nama mantras that include the suffix “namah,” such as:
“Shivaya Namah”
“Ramaya Namah”
“Shankaraya Namah”
Or, alternatively, whether only the bare divine names (such as “Shiva,” “Rama,” etc.) are traditionally permitted for initiation in such cases.
I would be grateful if members could kindly clarify:
Whether there are any restrictions mentioned in the Dharma shastras, Smritis, or Puranas regarding initiation into “namah”-ending mantras for such individuals.
Whether distinctions are made between mantra-diksha (formal initiation) and simple nama-japa (repetition of the divine name).
Any authoritative pramanas (scriptural references) from Smritis, Puranas, or related texts that address this issue.
If possible, I would appreciate citations (chapter/verse) for further study.
Thank you very much for your time and guidance.
Namaskaram,
Mani Teja.
