Dear sir,

  

I am collecting list of Dhatus (roots).



In the website: http://ashtadhyayi.com/dhatu/


I have come across the roots गोपाय and धूपाय. See the screenshot

I found:

गुप् भ्वादिः सेट् परस्मैपदी गु॑पूँ॑ रक्षणे ०१ ०४६१ ॥ ऊदित्

धूप् भ्वादिः सेट् परस्मैपदी धू॑पँ॑ सन्तापे ०१ ०४६२ ॥

 

Please advise whether I should keep गोपाय and धूपाय from ashtadhyayi.com or गुप् and धूप् from Sanskrit Documents?

नमांसि सर्वेभ्य: विद्वद्भ्य:।
‘गुपू रक्षणे’ इति भ्वादिगणे पठित:, तस्य च ‘भूवादयो धातव:’ इत्यनेन धातुसंज्ञा। तत: परं ‘गुपूधूपविच्छपणिपनिभ्य आय:’  इत्यनेन स्वार्थे आयप्रत्यय:। ‘गुप्+आय’ लघुपधगुण: ‘गोपाय’ इति। तत: ‘सनाद्यन्ता धातव:’ इत्यनेन आयान्तप्रत्ययस्य ‘गोपाय’ इत्यस्य धातुत्वं विधीयते।

आर्धधातुकस्थले ‘आयादय आर्धधातुके वा’ इत्यनेन आयप्रत्ययविधानस्य वैकल्पिकत्वं विधीयते। तेन लृटि आयपक्षे ‘गोपायिष्यति’, आयाभावपक्षे ‘गोपिष्यति’ इति रूपद्वयम्। तथा च इडाभावपक्षे ‘गोप्स्यति’ एवं रूपत्रयम्। 

अत: मूलत: ‘गुपू रक्षणे’ इति धातु:। ‘गोपाय’ इति मूलधातुस्वीकारे ‘गोपिष्यति’ ‘गोप्स्यति’ चेत्यादयो न सिद्ध्यन्ति। तथैव ‘धूप सन्तापे’ इति भ्वादिगणपठितो धातु एवं ज्ञेयमित्यहं चिन्तयामि।

गुपू, धूपू both are correct in the dhatupatha. The same is changed into गोपाय and धूपाय in usage in लार्वधातुक लकार only and in आर्धधातुक both are used. In लट् you have गोपायति from गोपाय,  but in लिट् you have both गोपायमास and जुगोप. So you have to keep both according to grammatical requirements and you cannot expect to keep both or keep one according to your will.
