Namaste,

What is the vyutpatti for the word वर्धन्ति?

 I see this word is used for "death anniversary" in the telugu language. So, I'd like to know the detailed meaning of it.

Answer to your question is given in page 14 of Telugu version of Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham's panchangam.

The page is saying that 

the word vardhanti is derived from the dhaatu vridhu - vriddhau. ( growth, progress, prosperity.)

It should be used in reference to birth day. 

To use it in reference to death universary is wrong, the opposite of the actual meaning.

There is no such word in Sanskrit Dictionaries I searched. As far as the explanation offered for its derivation from वृधु वृद्धौ which is a aatmanepada, any form वर्धन्ति/ वर्धन्ती cannot be derived from it as per the common rules of grammar. It can be वर्धयन्ती instead.

Thanks for sharing this image. According to this, many Telugu dictionaries hold the term 'vardhanti' to mean the 'date of death', and also date of birth. There is no grammatical derivation of this word which has gained popular usage in these two senses. 

I found the usage of this term in Madhva circles too, as for example:

Aug 17, 2014 - ... ಸಂಚಿಕೆ 2012. ಶ್ರೀ ಉತ್ತರಾದಿ ಮಠದ ಶ್ರೀ ಸತ್ಯಾತ್ಮ ತೀರ್ಥರ ಜಯತೀರ್ಥರ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ಮಾತುಗಳು ... ಅಂತಹ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ ಗುರುಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಪರಮಮಂಗಳಕರ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಇಂದು ನಾವು "ವರ್ಧಂತಿ ಉತ್ಸವ" ಎಂದು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ನಮ್ಮಂತಹ ...

Here it is the birthday of the present pontiff of the mutt. 

The term is also used in respect of Raghavendra Swamy too and also to commemorate the inauguration/start of a temple/mutt, etc.

The term is used in Sringeri tradition too to denote the birth day of the living pontiff. When he has passed away, it is called Jayanti.  The death day is called 'aaradhana.'

Respective scholars,

It has been clarified by Shri Ravva Shrihari, an eminent Sanskrit/Telugu scholar that the word "vardhanti" has no grammatical basis; and that it is widely used by all Telugu people (scholars and non-scholars) for the death anniversaries, which is only a misguided practice and has value of "rUDhi".
