This is just to add another instance of the use of the word:  In Carnatic music there is this name of a rAga:  punnAgavarALi.

Also, is this:

Kannada Name: Surahonne
Tamil Name:  Punnai, Pinnay
Telugu : Ponna, Suraponna

in any way related to a very strong smelling plant called in Kannada as 'nAgadALi' which is common even in city gardens?  In olden days they would say that the strong scent of the plant would attract snakes.

चम्पकाशोकपुन्नाग सौगन्धिकलसत्कचा ।

What is the etymology for पुन्नाग  ?

This is the etymology as given in Sabda-Saarasvata-Sarvasvam and other lexicons:

So it is used in different meanings, and in the Lalithasahasranama, it is used in sense of पुन्नाग flower, along with others in the line.

This has been already answered, as the synonym according to Ratnamala.

Dear Sri Subrahmanian Ji
In your mail it was mentioned with a question mark in the following manner:

" in any way related to a very strong smelling plant called in Kannada as 'nAgadALi' which is common even in city gardens?"
Is this your question or is it an added information? Please help me in understanding.
With warm regards,
Dr. Rani Sadasiva Murty

I thank all the scholars and Dr HN Bhat in particular
for sharing valuable information.

But according to Tamil literature
punnAga & surapunnai are different -

varaiyaṉa puṉṉākamum
karaiyaṉa curapuṉṉaiyum
       [paripāṭal  11:16-17]

Punnaga, Surapunnaga & Nagakesara are different plants. (Calophyllum inophyllum, Ochrocarpus longifolius & Messua ferrua respectively).
Nagakesara is floral parts ie kesara- Stamens are useful in Indian Medicine. In market floral parts of all three plants are sold in the name of Nagakesara. First two are substitutes of of third ie Nagakesara.
All are beautiful trees flowers.
