As a complete laywoman I will take a shot --
the deer were unblemished and perfect, suitable for sacrifice. The two brothers killed and ate them. Perhaps they did ritual sacrifice before eating the meat. Even if they did not, this does not mean they killed deer that was specially reared by someone for balidaan.

In the English translation, It says suitable. That doesn't mean it is meant for yajna.

Ramesh-ji,

• Bhushana: मेध्यान् शुचीन् भक्ष्यानिति यावत्
• Siromani: मेध्यान्मार्गे सम्प्राप्तान्मृगान्हत्वा

Monier-Williams gives "clean, pure, not defiling (by contact or by being eaten)" as one of the meanings of this word.

So I guess it's safe to say that they caught a healthy deer, not that the deer was meant for a yajna.

Best Regards,

Sreedhar
