There is a facebook post by one Sri Surajit Dasgupta ji :

Let me include Sanskrit in the #SurajitEdits series.
The most mispronounced syllable or vowel of consonantal allophone is the visarga. Even otherwise learned Sanskrit pundits pronounce अः as 'aha' instead of 'ah' [IPA /ɐh/]. नमः becomes नमह and even नमहा!

नमो विद्वद्भ्यः

One has to learn the pronunciation from  गुरु and to be careful that there will not be any influence of Mother Tongue .
वेद is called श्रुति as it is learnt through listening .
The pronunciation of विसर्ग -- अः  is different from ह । रामः is not रामह , i e it is not completely / exactly ह ।
हरिः - गुरुः - गौः  -- in such examples the विसर्ग is not ह (assimilation?) .
Why there is a problem ?  -- अ-कु-ह-विसर्जनीयानां कण्ठः -- both हकार and विसर्ग are articulated in the same place -- कण्ठः ।
Patanjali calls विसर्ग by the name अयोगवाहः  (महाभाष्यम्- हयवरट् ) -- not included in अच् or हल्  ( no उपदेश ) but are heard (in usages) .
It is a common error often seen / found with many , including Sanskrit Scholars that विसर्ग is pronounced like / as ह ।
ञ म ङ ण न - the अनुनासिकवर्णाः are mispronounced by many .
Food habits also have some impact on pronunciation.

The following videos were shared on BVP in an older thread :

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are these two videos teaching pronunciation of Sanskrit to an English speaking audience :

Here, the teacher is advising the echo type pronunciation, aha, ihi, uhu, ēhe, ōho, aihi, ouhu

But in the comments below these videos, there are positions taken on both sides.

Regarding the effect of the echo type pronunciation on meter , the teacher seems to be a little shaky in his stand.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

HH Swamiji himself in the first two videos above, uses the echo type pronunciation in his own pronunciation. In his explanation , if I am not missing something, there is no conclusive stand presented, whether echo type pronunciation is to be followed or just 'h' ending is to be followed.

There is an interesting etymology for visarga given in this commentary to Paniniya Shikshaa edited by Manmohan Ghosh.

The etymology given is

विविधं सृज्यते क्षिप्यते इति विसर्गः ।
