Tamil script and/or IPA transliteration and/or English translation would be more communicable.

I don't think it is from any gita verse.

I found the complete saying, I very often heard quoted by the Tamil Actor Rajnikanth frequently:

Ethu nadanthatho athu nanraga nadanthathu Ethu nadakiratho athu nanragave nadakirathu Ethu nadaka irukiratho athuvum Nandragave nadakkum

What has happened, has happened for good. What is happening, (at present), that also for good. And what is going to happen, will be for good.

The above is the literal translation. I can't think any line of Gita, having the same or similar idea.

yes  the wordings are not   available in Gita. they are the creations of outsiders. Similar to "Janani janmabhoomi swargadhabi gariyasi  these are the words reported to have been told by Rama when lakshmanan asked him why he wish to leave swarnabhommi lanka.  but nowhere these words are found in valmiki ramayana.  seshadri

In my understanding there are many such statements floating around for
which we may not find exact equivalents in the Gita text. These statements
are to be considered as paraphrased ones. These so called paraphrases can
can at times be thoroughly misleading too, as Adi Shankara himself
observes in his opening remarks:

`atyantaviruddhaarthatvena laukikairgrihayamaanamupalabhya aham vivekato
arthanirdhaaranaartham samkshepato vivaranam karishyami'

The saying that is quoted by you, though not misleading, could perhaps be
considered as a corollary to the opening statement of Sri Krishna to
Arjuna in the II Chapter

`ashocyaananvashocastvam' (you have been worrying about something that is
not worth worrying).

Hope this may be of some use to you.

best regards,
-ram.

This 'Bhagavdgita's message in brief' text is found in its Hindi and Telugu forms in Hyderabad also.

There should be a text created in one of the Indian languages that is getting translated into various other Indian languages.

The intention of the creator of the original text might be good only. The original creator might have wanted to create a 'simplified' version of the profound work.

The scholars might want to see if the text has any part that is in conflict/contradiction with the Gita's message.

As long as there is no contradiction that can be looked at as a harmless popularization through simplification.

Dear Scholars,
In my childhood, I had seen the so-called "gItA sAra" starting with "jo huA acchA huA.." which made me doubt- "then if some theft, murder, war is done- is it good too?" If yes- then for whom? the doer or the victim?
If "parivartan saMsAr kA niyaM hai"- then what about that which is stable? What will a human-being rely on? Will gItA just say about saMsAra and leave the paramAtmA who is viSvavyApI?

Then I learnt not even one statement out of that list- was true to gItA spirit. (God knows who prepared it- and when and why? whether it is based on gItA at all or not ; when someone says- something is gItA "sAra" why will people have to search for the sources and mostly fail to find the statements..? This confusion created is enough beared. Enough damage done.

gItA is one of India's (or world's) greatest books ever produced.. inspiring generations together- all over the globe. I think now its time to come out with real gItA sAra with Sanskrit quotations- (and a simple translation in English and Hindi) so that when one quotes some line, one is damn sure- it is from gItA. There will be surely some lists prepared by individuals ( I heard about one prepared by Ramana Maharshi with 50 quotes, could not get it..) or some traditional institutions, but definitely not reaching to common public who are away from them.. and surprisingly, these meaningless lines like "jo huA acchA huA" reach one and all, creating a lot of confusion!!

Scholars realated to Sanskrit and people from other streams, who have a habit of reading gItA, will certainly have their own favorite quotes from the divine book. I have prepared a list of my own choice- I could select 21 statements which inspired me - (looking just upto 6th chapter- I would like to add others too.)

Can others in the forum come up with their lists too, so that the oft-repeated and inspired quotes be picked, and prepared as a list of "true gItA sAra". Some 11 or 15 or 21 (or less or more)- and release in the World Sanskrit Conference or some big event related to Samskrita Bharati, where, common (I mean- unrelated to Sanskrit in anyway) people come- and make the list public, so that ordinary people (who can only know gItA by name and not spirit) can come out with real quotes when needed?
If the esteemed members of the forum accept on the statement as "sAra" level (undoubtedly gItA has each line (700+ *2 lines) complete in itself.. but for general people such "sAra statements" will help), then it is as good as approved.

For preparing list, No need of typing the statement again- I just used this webpage-
I used Ctrl+F to find my quote- easily with gItA-shloka number.

I request sajjanas and mahAtmas in this forum to "Please" think about this.

Here is my list-
Warm regards.

All the phylosophical ideas could be traced in one or other way, to Gita, which is a practical guide to life and goal of life discussed.

But the sayings like the one quoted, need not be dugged up into Gita ror original lines or paraphrases as the questioner and the contributors to this thread expressively  want to popularise the importance of Gita.

I. All the phylosophical ideas could be traced in one or other way, to Gita ????

Interesting.

II. which is a practical guide to life and goal of life discussed ----- ???? (grammar?)

III. Connecting the two clauses

But the sayings like the one quoted, need not be dugged up into Gita ror original lines or paraphrases

and

the questioner and the contributors to this thread expressively  want to popularise the importance of Gita.

through 'as' is beyond my comprehension.

Does it mean " The questioner and the contributors to the thread want to popularize the (importance of?) Gita by tracing the quotes like the one brought to discussion by the thread initiator to the Gita. That is not correct. Such quotes need not be taken so seriously as to be traced to the Gita. The Gita does not need to be popularized through such 'not to be taken seriously' kind of quotes."?

1. All the previous contributors to the thread did not agree with each other. So a common motive can not be attributed to all of them.

2. Attributing motives to the questioner is not a healthy practice. If something is passing for the purport of the Gita , it is reasonable to verify whether such a passing is valid/ tenable or not.

3. Dr. HN Bhat quoted one contributor, that is me. So his response seems to be directed against my contribution.

4. I did not want to popularize the Gita through the text of which the questioner's quote is apart. I was saying that the creator of the text might have wanted to spread what that person comprehended as the 'purport' of the Gita in a simple, popular style. The text does not claim to be a paraphrase of a few selected verses of the Gita. So there is no point in tracing the verse of which the quotes are paraphrases. Whether the 'purport'- maker is right in his comprehension and expression or not can be scrutinized by the scholars of the Gita. If scholars find that the text passing for the purport of the Gita is not justified in passing that way they can put their foot down and stop the 'harm' being done to the Gita through such texts. This is what I wanted to communicate through my response.

5. I do not know the creator of the text of the questioner's quote is a part nor am I a part of a campaign of popularizing the Gita through such texts.

6. Shivosha Vyasanji came up with a constructive suggestion matching with the scholarly profile of this forum. V. Subrahmanianji agreed with him. Seconded him. I agree with both of them. I second the proposal of SHivosha Vyasanji.

Regards,

Nagaraj

Thankyou Shri Paturi, for all the PDFs. I will go through them and prepare that list.
If learned scholars in the forum came up with other such sources, or their own lists, I would like to compile the gIta sAra myself based on most quoted ones and give it here. We can decide the number of quotes. But publishing a pamphlet or leaflet is an issue. If Samskrita bharati or someone can take it up- the work will see light.
Members are requested to contribute atleast one or two or five or ten quotes which they like the most out of gItA. Please give Sloka number if whole verse cannot be typed.
Let us have a meaningful, REAL gItA sAra that would inspire very home, every work place, every temple.. where the non-authentic and "so-called gItAsAra" has been enjoying an undue position creating confusion. The mahat-gItAmRta-dugdhaM reach every heart and soul that cherish her in her true spirit.

Namaste!

There are Gita Saras in Agni Purana & Garuda Purana. Similar Gita Saras might be there in other Puranas too. Gita Sara from Agni Purana has 58 verses and the same from Garuda Purana has only 12 verses. Unicode texts of these 2 Gita Saras are attached to this mail.

While it is necessary to make a comparative study of all the existing Gita Saras which are mostly in Sanskrit verse, for preparing a new Gita Sara, it should also be in a language that is easily understood by common man.

There is an extremely popular audio recording of Bhagavadgita musically rendered with s'loka and Telugu taatparya recitation by the legendary Sri Ghantasala.

This uses  selected 100 verses from the Geetaa.

There are many websites dealing with this audio and its textual version.

I am sharing the s'loka part of the textual version picked up from one of the websites.

I noticed another interesting way of looking at the issue of essence of gītā .

When I was taking a relook at Bhagavadgita As It Is by Parama Pūjya Srīla Bhakti Vedanta Prabhu Pāda, I noticed that he considered the second Adhyāya itself as Gītāsāra.

On a related note, four verses (10.8 to 10.11) of the tenth Adhyāya of the Gītā are called as Catuḥślokī Gītā by two Gauḍīya Vaiṣnava Ācāryas - Śrīviśvanāthacakravartī (in the Gītāsārārthavarṣiṇī commentary) and Śrībaladevavidyābhūṣaṇa (in the Gītābhūṣaṇa commentary).

Dear friends,

It is believed that there is a "Geeta-saar" spoken by Lord Krishna himself to Arjuna. It contains 29 verses. I am looking for this text in Devanagari script. I understand it is also available in Bengal script.

Regards,
Sunil KB

Dear Sri Narayana Iyengar,

Thanks for reaffirming what I posted in my June 22 post in this thread as:

"There is another gītārtha sangraha mentioned to be of srī yāmunāchārya .  Even this is not a text with verses selected from the gītā. It is the purport according to the parama pūjya āchārya".
