I've been asked to find the source of the following shloka.
Can someone give me the source of this shloka, or some context about it. I.e. is it modern or older or anything else.

The traditional sloka as learnt in my childhood (I am now 74) through elders used to be - 

कराग्रे वर्तते लक्ष्मीः करमूले सरस्वती।
करमध्ये स्थिता गौरी प्रभाते करदर्शनम्॥

This refers to the three shakti-s, powers, needed in human life - money, learning and physical power. Someone seems to have recently popularized the sloka quoted by you which replaces Gouri by Govinda for no reason, unless they do not want to see anything to do with Shiva.

If that is done, then the meter (chandas) is violated.  Whoever does this is quite ignorant of Sanskrit prosody.

In my case I learnt it in the following order: Lakshmi, Gouri, Saraswathi (with appropriate changes in the lyrics).  I think this is just some traditional poem that doesn't have any proper "source" as such.

As far as I know, it is not part of any larger work but one of those free-floating "traditional" shlokas. It is given in all nitya karma prayoga

books for Gujarati Brahmanas as part of pratah smarana "morning remembrance" which is to be recited immediately upon waking up.

Others have mentioned the variant with Gauri instead of Govinda. I am inclined to believe that is more genuine for reasons stylistic (three shaktis who

are the wives of the trimurtis or form a feminine trimurti according to tantra) and metrical. However the Govinda form is quite popular and not some

recent change. In my family we say it this way even though we are Smartas and Shaiva/Shakta by inclination.

Also Shuklayajurvediya brahmanityakarmasamucchaya has the variant sthito brahma (i.e. Brahman not Prajapati) and there may be other versions too.
