Dear all,
Why weddings of Rama and Krishna are called Radha Kalyanam & Seetha kalyanam and not the other way?
In dakshina bhajana sampradaya while reciting coornika, they call radha madhava vivaaha and not radha Krishna vivaaha?
Request members to clarify.

With due respects
Ramesh

When reading your message, it comes to mind :-
  1. First of all, there was never any wedding of राधा and कृष्ण. So "radha madhava vivaaha" or "radha Krishna vivaaha" both are misconceptions.
  2. If so, "vivaaha" must not be translated as wedding. The option then becomes to focus on the etymology of the word विवाहः. Obvious धातुः is वि+वह्. We have similar word प्रवाहः where the उपसर्गः is प्र. So विशेषं वहनमनेन इति विवाहः, प्रकृष्टं वहनमनेन इति प्रवाहः |
  3. राधा and माधव rhyme with each other quite well, becoming onomatopoetic because of repetition of वर्ण ध.
  4. Thinking of रामसीताविवाहः, it was first the स्वयंवरम्, where the privilege of choice was with Sita. Her choice was then sanctified and celebrated by विवाहसंस्कार. In all स्वयंवर-s the privilege vested with the bride. So they are all called by the lady's name - सीतास्वयंवरम्, रुक्मिणीस्वयंवरम्, दमयन्तीस्वयंवरम्, इन्दुमतीस्वयंवरम्, etc.

Onomatopoeia is not the right word here,
alliteration serves better.

Not an answer, but this may be of interest to you. Note the names of two small works by Gosvami Tulasidasa:
1) पार्वती-मंगल: A work on the wedding of mother Parvati and Lord Shiva
2) जानकी-मंगल: A work on the wedding of mother Sita and Lord Rama
Needless to say, पार्वती-मंगल and जानकी-मंगल are the Prakrit spellings of पार्वती-मङ्गल and जानकी-मङ्गल. Also note that the use of the word मङ्गल for wedding is similar to the use of the word कल्याण for wedding.

PS: The works are in the ‘sohar’ (a metre for folk songs) and ‘harigitika’ (a Prakrit metre) metres

Dear Ramesh,

That apart, there are ample reference to show 'ladies first' :

शचीपुरन्दराभ्यां नमः, वाणीहिरण्यगर्भाभ्यां नमः, उमामहेश्वराभ्यां नमः, सीतारामाभ्यां नमः, अरुन्दतीवशिष्ठाभ्यां नमः , लक्ष्मीनारायणाभ्यां नमः ....

Namaste

It is also because of Panini Sutras अजाद्यदन्तम् 2-2-33 and अल्पाच्तरम्‌ 2-2-34 and the Vartika for 2-2-34 saying अभ्यर्हितं च पूर्वं निपतति इति वक्तव्यम्। मातापितरौ।

In a Dvandva compound the more honourable member is placed first. Mother is more honourable than Father. Therefore मातापितरौ and so on. But in उमामहेश्वराभ्यां  उमा and महेश्वर are equally honourable but उमा has less vowels and it is placed first.
