Is there any evidence available for the tradition of writing Vedic accents? For example, if the Udātta accent is described as the tone ‘produced by the upper part (ऊर्ध्वभागेन निष्पन्न)’ १.२.२९ पाणिनि सू. , then the mark ( ' ) should logically appear on the Udātta. But we find this mark applied to the Svarita instead. Please show the proper direction.

The mark  ॑ should be visualized as a downwards arrow. It signifies that the tone is falling down, which is the property if a svarita.
