Dear Colleagues,

This morning I came across on DLI a 1927 publication by Motilal Banarsidass of a work titled Rasahṛdayatantra by an author named Govindabhagavatpāda.  Here is the DLI source: http://www.new.dli.ernet.in/handle/2015/369609
The editor of the work claims that this author is the same as the teacher of Shankaracharya.  I am not aware of any surviving works of Govinda, the teacher of Shankaracharya.  So this claim in the introduction to Rasahṛdayatantra came across as a surprise to me.
I am wondering if any members of the BVP have looked at this work, or have heard of any other works of Govinda, the teacher of Shankaracharya.  Any light on this issue is welcome.

Yoga Taravali, Advaita Anubhuti and Brhma Amrita Varshini are said to be written by Govinda the teacher of Shankaracharya according to the book Age Of Sankara Narayana Sastry T.S. I don't know if any of the works are printed or available as manuscripts.

It is claimed that Govinda Bhagvat Pada wrote Avadhuta gita not the well known Avadhuta Gita but another one whose verses are said to be very similar to Vakya Vrutti ascribed to Shnakarcharya. All these claims from various Shankara digvijayas and nothing much is known.

Rasahridayatantra is a book on alchemy. Most of the references to this book mention the author Govinda Bhagavatpada to be 9th century AD. This date itself shows that to consider that he is the guru of Sankara Bhagavatpada is a mistaken identity.

But this book seems to be highly popular in circles interested in alchemy.

After some amount of search, now I realize that this book is highly familiar to the Rasa shastra students of Ayurvedic colleges.

The period of authorship of the book seems to be when many Jain Rasa shastra books were being written. So it is possible that this author is a Jain.

Words like Bhagavan are also frequently used in Jain books.

There is a Sanskrit commentary by (Late) Vidwan NSVenkatanathacharya on Yogataravali  published by ORI, Mysore.

The same (ie with the said commentary) has been published with a Hindi translation by Varanaseya Samskrta Samsthan

The following is from an article

Rasa Hridaya Tantra - A Critical Analysis

By Ramesh Kumar Gupta, Sudhaldev Mahapatra, Sumer Singh, Jha C B

Published in International Journal of Ayurvedic Medicine

Available at

http://www.ijam.co.in/index.php/ijam/article/view/05342014:

In 9th century A.D. Acharya Govinda Bhagavatpada, the preceptor of Sankaracharya, the illustrious profounder of Advaita Vedanta, authored this Rasa Hridaya Tantra which provides elaborative description of the processing of Mercury both for loha siddhi (metallic transformation i.e. formation of noble metal from the base metal) and deha siddhi (metabolic transformation i.e. make the body strong and healthy which leads to salvation). His father was Sri Sumano Vishnu and grandfather was Sri Magal Vishnu (1). Acharya Govinda Bhagavatpada was Raja vaidya of Sri Madan, king of Kirata. On request of king this text was composed by him.

"His father was Sri Sumano Vishnu and grandfather was Sri Magal Vishnu (1). Acharya Govinda Bhagavatpada was Raja vaidya of Sri Madan, king of Kirata."

do not match with any info on "Acharya Govinda Bhagavatpada, the preceptor of Sankaracharya, the illustrious profounder (sic) of Advaita Vedanta"

Thanks everyone who provided further information on this text, Rasahṛdayatantra, and how its author, Govindabhagavatpāda, may not be identical with the preceptor of Śaṅkarācārya.

With best regards,

Madhav Deshpande

Sometimes, the following two works are also ascribed to Govindabhagavatpada:

1. Yogataravali (at other times, attributed to Shankara): This work exists with a commentary wherein sometimes the mula verse are attributed to Govinda and the bhashya to Shankara. At other times, both to Shankara. Or sometimes the verses to Hastamalaka and bhashya by his teacher Shankara.
2. Paramarthasara of Shesha, different from its more popular recast by Abhinavagupta later.

Both of these are published several times. Let me know if you need copies electronically.

Regards,

Vishal Agarwal
