नमो विद्वद्भ्यः

I am looking for the following publications on the Kṛtis of Muttusvāmi Dīkṣitar :

(1) Comprehensive compilations and critical editions, if any.

(2) Sanskrit commentaries on any of the Kṛtis.

(3) Scholarly English translations (with the padaccheda, anvaya, grammatical analyses, śāstric references, etc.)

PS: This is in addition to scholarly works on the Kṛtis of Tyāgarāja, for which I started another thread.

Namaste Nityānanda jī,

While these are not commentaries in the conventional sense, these biographical Sanskrit kāvya-s on Sadguru Tyāgarāja and Muttusvāmī Dīkṣita by Dr V Raghavan that contextualize several kṛti-s maybe relevant to this project. The second of these was released in a new edition with English translation by Dr. Sumithra Vasudev in April 2025.

Both works can be obtained from the Dr V Raghavan Centre for Performing Arts via the contact details here.

Thanks and regards,
Arvind

Dear Arvind,

Would you know if this Dr. Raghavan had a daughter named Priyamvada?  If so I knew her in Montreal.

Regards.

While the renderings are of help to someone who wants to get just the gist of the lyrics,
they need in addition a properly transliterated presentation, and even a literal translation.
While it is not always easy to translate the frequent bahuvrīhi-s, not just in Sanskrit, what with their laconicity,
yet a literal translation in addition, however inevitably clumsy many times, can serve certain needs.

Scholars who have caught the spirit of the original author/text,
and can express themselves in the target language with great facility,
and have a general awareness of the cultural nuances and a sensitivity to
the linguistic subtleties and common (and even rare) tropes of speech of the text
- are the ones that can render fuller justice to the original.

Else, something or the other is missed. It is such instances that inspired
the proverbial phrase: "lost in translation". A definition of poetry
celebrates this shortcoming well: "Poetry is what gets lost in translation."

A good many musical texts, especially of South India,
are compositions of masters of language, Sanskrit and local,
often tāttvic in character, and reflective of the refinements of the
sampradāya-s of the authors, and not unendowed with a poetic touch.

(That is not to deny that some compositions do betray
the linguistic ineptitude of the composer.)

Where translations, however well done, cannot serve certain needs,
or fulfil certain roles, Notes in addition can take care of.
