Subject: [INDOLOGY] A regressive face of Indology at the World Sanskrit Conference
To: Indology List <indo...@list.indology.info>

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This article, by Professor Vajpeyi, is a must-read. For many on this list, it will not be news that Indology has entrenched problems with sexism and elitism; many in our discipline are also soft on Hindutva. For others, some or all of these things may be surprising.

I encourage everyone to read with an open mind, rather than with a posture of umbrage and denial that has become all-too-common these days. As Professor Vajpeyi describes, the reception of the public forum at the 17th World Sanskrit Conference in Vancouver was an appalling display of unprofessionalism, misogyny, and class privilege, a "regressive face of Indology." My friends - We need to ask ourselves some tough questions about what sorts of prejudices and behaviours we are tolerating and harboring in our corner of the scholarly world. We tend to be quite good at exercising a critical gaze when it comes to mimamsa, kavya, and so forth. I hope we can do the same with ourselves.

All the Best,

Audrey

Dear all,

This gives us all reason to think. I have some friends who are worried about publishing any new thoughts on ancient India for fear of being identified with these fringe elements. Of course, the other side ("the left") is as irrational as this side ("the right").

Regards

In the contemporary parlance, the neologism 'fringe elements' has a connotation. Those who physically attack the persons who hold, practice ideas other than their own , particularly from the Hindu community, are being called 'fringe elements'.

You using that word in the context of Sanskrit scholars protesting misrepresentation of Sanskrit, its literature, India and its culture through verbal debate was completely out of context and your recent post  explaining the meaning of 'fringe elements as "   people who hold extreme views and are not ready for any discussion. " betrays your lack of proper understanding of these words and their usages.

Leaving aside your wrong choice of words, your understanding of the scholars  scholars protesting misrepresentation of Sanskrit, its literature, India and its culture through verbal debate as  people who hold extreme views and are not ready for any discussion shows your lack of proper information about the event and your gullible buying of false propaganda.

Dear Nagaraj,

Am sorry for using the wrong words. Did not not mean any disrespect.

Can someone tell me where "Professor Vajpeyi" is a "professor"? अथवा यौगिकार्थ एव ग्राह्यः?

Seriously, people should desist passing on titles (अग्निहोत्री, वाजपेयी, द्विवेदी, त्रिवेदी, चतुर्वेदी, अवधानी, शास्त्री, उपाध्याय, वन्द्योपाध्याय …) as last-names to their children - they should be earned. It stings every time a ब्रह्मद्विट् possessing such a title carries out his karma.
