Dear list members

A former classmate of mine is looking for English books to help her get a better understanding of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. She does not want to read original text or translations, does not know Sanskrit and is not comfortable reading in Hindi or other Indian languages. She is especially looking for books which elaborate on righteousness of the characters and treatment of women in the two epics (she is more curious than judgemental/feminist).

There are a lot of easy-to-find English books (e.g. works of Doniger or Devdutt Pattanaik) which give a narrow, biased, or even mistaken perspective on these matters. What might help here would be the traditional perspective in English, like what works like Dharmakutam and Ramayana Mimamsa of Svami Karpatri offer.

Any books the list can recommend? I know of Shatavadhani Ganesh Ji's Human Values in Ramayana, but no idea where to get it from.

Thanks, Nityanand

Dear Mishra mahOdaya,

It is so kind of you to remember by small booklets. They are published by the Gandhi Center of Human Values,  Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan,  Bangalore center.  Here original quotations from these two epics with simple English translation are given. These are specially meant for the beginners. Apart from these, many other titles on similar subjects authored by different scholars are also available. Special mention must be made about the book pack of ten titles dealing with various aspects of Sanskrit literature that includes the Vedas, Upanishads, arthashaastra, dharmashaastra, alamkaarashaastra, sixty four arts,  sciences etc. This is particularly meant for the youth.

Regards

Ganesh

You may try Ramayana books series in English by Shubha Vilas. As far as I know, till now 3 books are printed and are available for purchase on amazon and other websites. My friend had gifted me one. I was very inspired to read how he connected situations in Ramayana to human values.

There is a nice book 'Lectures of Ramayana' by Rt Honorable Srinivasa Shastry where he analyses several characters in his own inimitable style. However, I am not
sure if that book is available. I have an old copy from my father's library.

I am interested in this pack of ten booklets. But need to know it is
authored by whom and where it is available.
