Dear Scholars,

What is the exact meaning of the root स्नस्?

1) As per the DhatuPatha by Sri Aswini Kumar Agarwal

2) As per Aptes Dictionary:

3) As per MW dictionary

Both Dhatupatha Handbook and Apte’s dictinary convey the meaning of “spit/vomit”  whereas MW dictionary does not convey such meaning.

Regards

नमो विद्वद्भ्यः

One thing should be noted --

Panini did not assign any meaning to the roots of धातुs -- it was भीमसेन  and others who offered some meaning .

धातूनाम् उपसर्गाणाम् निपातानां च अनेकार्थत्वम् - इति नियमः ।

One has to depend upon the usage and व्याख्यानम्  for the meaning .

मृषः तितिक्षायाम् , परौ भुवो’वज्ञाने ( पा सू) etc are प्रमाणम्  in stating  that धातूनाम् अनेकार्थत्वम् is acceptable to Panini .

धन्यो’स्मि

You may check the Madhaviya Dhaturvritti it lists three meanings अदने आदाने अदर्शने. As per Ksirasvamin it is निरसने.

This seems to be a rare root. The word स्नसा seems to be derived from this root. It is explained by Hemachandra as स्नायु (cited in Vachaspatyam and Shabdakalpadrumah). One may refer the work by Hemachandra's lexicon and see how commentaries have explained the word.

Would be useful to see any other usages from this root.
