A rather disturbing paper that seeks to denigrate the unparalleled achievement of K.M. Ganguli. It is like Lytton Strachey's "Eminent Victorians" debunking great names to gain publicity. No one has noticed that M.N.Dutt who also translated the Mahabharata, plagiarised the entire Shanti and Anushasana Parvas from Ganguli. His sole contribution was to distribute Ganguli's prose sloka-wise.

Both Sri Pradip Bhattacharya and Sri Bibek Debroy are from Administration related areas only. 

1947 born Pradip Bhattacharya is from Calcutta, India. He has been the West Bengal State Govt.'s nominee on the Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta for over 15 years and was on  the editorial board of its Journal of Human Values. An Indian Administrative Service officer, he has a PhD in Comparative Literature for his research on the Mahabharata, a Post Graduate Diploma with distinction in Public Service Training from Manchester. He is India’s only International HRD Fellow (awarded by Manchester University and the Institute of Training and Development, UK) and an MD in Homeopathy. He has authored and edited 33 books and published numerous articles in India and abroad on Public Administration, Comparative Mythology, Mahabharata, Homeopathy, Management and Human Values. His latest books are: “The Mokshadharma Parva of the Mahabharata” the most complete English translation sloka-by-sloka in verse and “The Jaiminiya Mahabharata--a critical edition of two manuscripts with sloka-by-sloka translation in English verse”. He has chaired sessions and presented papers in International and National Conferences on the Mahabharata in Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.”

The article of Sri Bibek-ji in OPEN is for the most part quotes from different sources. 

He is almost making the long references speak for themselves. 

We here are no experts on the topic. 

We need not take sides. 

Sri Pradip Bhattacharya who definitely is a greater expert on the topic than us definitely deserves to respond. 

But Sri Bibek-ji is also an expert on the topic. 

We can only watch the discussion as  non-expert readers on the topic.

What is interesting is Sri Bibek Debroy does not comment on the scholarship of the work,

he is concerned about the authorship and the personality of Sri Ganguli.  A critical evaluation

of the "first translation" would have been more valuable.  I agree we are non-experts on historical

details (like I learned lately that Mt Everest was measured by an Indian cartographer who

worked for the British officer.)  These examples are rampant during the British period.  it

is quite possible that Mr Ganguli did not do the work but got it published in his name.

Such activities continue in the present time also in various forms.

The context of Sri Pradip Bhattarji's remarks comes in the context of an author trying to challenge a perception which many scholars believe to be true that Sri Ganguli did translate the Mahabharata himself.

The same question can be asked about all writings written during the colonial era by foreign rulers and visa versa.

Though it may be unpatriotic for an American to say many Americans believe in the theory that NASA did not send men to the moon.

What I can say is that on the numerous occasions that I did check K. M. Ganguli's translation, there were no issues with it: it stays close to the original, is accurate and very readable. The long quote of Sri Debroy is from one document which - unlike a judgement - need not be taken as the final position of the administration of that time, on that matter. Even if Sri Debroy and Sri Bhattacharya are avoiding the res, we can, and should, look at that. Any examples of where K. M. Ganguli's work is deficient may be brought forth, if such are found. Such discussions are more fruitful.
