Dear List Members:

I have a doubt regarding the source for Sun gazing through the hastha mudra for madhyanika sandhyavandana.

Shri Venkat Sriram ji was kind enough to point me to the below verse:

नेक्षेतोद्यन्तं आदित्यं नास्तं यान्तं कदा चन ।
नोपसृष्टं न वारिस्थं न मध्यं नभसो गतम् ।। मनुस्मृति (4/37)

But it only says not to look at the rising or setting sun. It does not explicitly ask one to look at the Sun at the apex point. I'd like to know if there is a source for the sun gazing bit.

Also given the above verse from Manu Smriti, what is the expert opinion of the learned ones regarding the culture of Sun Eating / Sun gazing i.e looking at the rising Sun in incremental units of time ie starting with 10 secs today, 20 secs tomorrow and so on. as propounded by modern savants like Sunyogi Umashankar and others?

There are some genuine Yogis like Prahlad Jani who photosynthesize, but the others I am not so sure of.

Thanks,

Venkat

Can you please share the Sun gazing part of Maadhyahnika Sandhyaavandana:

Is it a description in a mantra used in the procedure or is there an explicit portion of the procedure that you saw anywhere that is given a name that means Sun gazing ?

Is the following the mantra you have in mind as the Sun gazing mantra?

य उदगान्महतोSर्णवाद्विभाजमान सरिरस्य मध्यात् स मा वृषभो लोहिताक्षः सूर्यो विपश्चिन्मनसा पुनातु।

Sun gazing is feasible practically only at Sunrise and Sunset times.Gazing Sun the Afternoon for Madhyahnika Sandhyavandana is not only not feasible but is harmful to the eyes if attempted by force .

Dear Shri CSR Prabhu ji:

I would diasagree with you on the basis of personal experience of more than 2 decades. I have excellent eye-sight. The noon Sun can be gazed at but through the mudra for the 10 seconds or so it takes to chant the mantras.
More than that I am not sure.

Sri Nagaraj ji please see attached for the full mantra in madhyanika sandhyavandana.

Regards,

Venkat

May be possible through the Mudra to some extant for a very
short period.Longer exposure will damage the eyes.Normally even that is not possible for general public.I also depends on the intensity of light and whether condition like summer or otherwise
Where as for Sunrise and Sunset these problems donot exist

Theoretically yes. Noon time Sun is at His brightest.

However, Rising and setting Suns should not be seen as per Manu Smriti (The shloka in the original post)--> The reasons for this are not very clear to me though.

Temporally one will be in Japa from when stars are visible to sunrise during prAtasandhya and from sun visible and approaching asta to when stars are visible for sAyam sandhya. Apart from this problem of opportunity, I am not sure if any other reasons exist for not gazing at the rising and setting Suns. If someone knows, kindlly do enlighten me.

Namaste,
I was taught that the mudra is called varuNa pAsha (ref: the sandhyAvandana book by 'Anna' Subramanium published by RK Mutt Chennai), so perhaps that (ie the association with varUNa, the lord of the waters) has a cooling effect and prevent damage to the eyes? In general, a worship of the sun is prescribed for healthy eyes at many places in the shAstra.

There seems to be some variation on when and how long the sun is seen during mAdhyAhnika. In the procedure taught to me, the sun should seen through the varuNapAsha mudra when jyok ca sUryam dRshe is uttered. Others say that the sun should be seen when pashyema sharadasshatam is uttered. Some others say that it should be seen through the entire portion - pashyema sharadasshatam...until jyok ca sUryam dRshe.

Regards,
Venkatraghavan

You are mixing कल्प with आयुर्वेद , this is good --

Dear Prof Korada, Thanks for your posting contribution to the discussion of Sun gazing. In my opinion, the following factors need to be given attention. (1) Skin color chemical in skins of white, brown and black people.(2) Filtering effect of atmosphere of the earth,(3) Ultraviolet rays and their effect on eyes. With regards, NRJOSHI

Dear Shri Korada ji:

Revisiting this old thread, I have some questions that hopefully you can resolve for me.

Many of our puranas talk about our heroes and heroines performing panchAgni tapasya. Staying in the midst of 4 fires with the Sun on top.
Is this a special case or exception to the rules in Pu. Mi and in Dharma shastras?

On this subject what are the lakshaNAs for tapasya given in shastra?

I understand that the last question may not exactly segue on the stated topic and may require a fresh thread to do justice perhaps?

Venkat
