question on ऐतरेयोपनिषद् शान्करभाष्य - आत्मा पद विवरण

नमो गुरुभ्यः 

In his commentary on the very first mantra of aitareya, Bhagavan Shankara writes 

आत्मा आप्नोतेरत्तेरततेर्वा ... 

आत्मा comes from आप् (pervade), अद् (eat), अत् (walk/run). Can you please help me with the details of the etymology from these?

In the commentary, Anandagiri Acharya gives a Smriti and gives the meaning thereof: 


वाशब्दश्चार्थ आदानं च समुच्चिनोति । तथा च स्मृतिः “यच्चाऽऽप्नोति यदादत्ते यच्चात्ति विषयानिह । यच्चास्य सन्ततो भावस्तस्मादात्मेति कीर्त्यते “ ॥ इति । अत्राऽऽप्तिर्ज्ञानं व्याप्तिश्चोच्यते । सत्तास्फुरणाभ्यां सर्वं व्याप्नोतीति सर्वज्ञत्वं सर्वशक्तित्वं चोच्यते । सत्ताप्रदानेनोपादानत्वसूचनात् सर्वशक्तित्वम्, अत्तीत्यनेन संहर्तृत्वम्, अततीत्यनेन त्रिविधपरिच्छेदराहित्यमुच्यत इति । अशनायादिवर्जितत्वादिति विषयादानेन रूढ्या च प्रत्यगभेदश्चोच्यत इत्युक्तरूप आत्मपदेनोच्यत इत्यर्थः ।


Shankara has cited that smriti that Anandagiri cites above, in the Kathopanishad bhashya: 2.1.1 


यच्चाप्नोति यदादत्ते यच्चात्ति विषयानिह । यच्चास्य सन्ततो भावस्तस्मादात्मेति कीर्त्यते’ ; इत्यात्मशब्दव्युत्पत्तिस्मरणात् ।


for which Gambhirananda's translation is:


 "Since It pervades, absorbs, and enjoys (all) objects in the world, and since from It the world derives its continuous existence, therefore, is It called the atmā” (Linga Purana, I.lxx.96). 


One can derive the meaning of the words as explained by Anandagiri in his above gloss.
