Dear Scholars,

What is the correct form of the root रञ्ज् rañj or रन्ज् ranj ?

Madhaviya Dhatu Vrtti gives the form रन्ज् ranj

Dhatupatha Handbook and at other places, it is written as रञ्ज् rañj.

Does न् change to ञ् ?

रन्ज् is not correct. The न् should change to nasal of ज the consonant that follows.

      कुन्च, क्रुन्च, लुन्च, अन्चु इत्यादीनां धातूनां वियषे क्षीरतरङ्गिण्यां ४० पृष्टे टिप्पण्यां एवं लिखितम्, "क्रुन्चेत्यादिषु धातुस्वरूप (मूलधातु) प्रदर्शनार्थं परसवर्णमकृत्वा नकरनिर्देशः कृत इति बोध्यम्। प्रयोगावस्थायां तु परसवर्णं भवत्येव"।

    १. अनेन मूल धातुः 'रन्ज्' एव क्वचित् परसवर्णं कृत्वैव 'रञ्ज्' इत्यपि पाठः दृश्यते। एतदनुसारेण अस्माभिः Concordance of Pāṇinian Dhātuvṛttis अत्र एतादृश स्थलेषु 'मानकरूपं' नामकरणं कृत्वा तृषु धातुवृत्तिषु एकरूपता आनीता। कृपया अन्तरजालं वीक्ष्यताम्।

     २. "रञ्जेश्च"(पा.अष्टा. ६.४.२६) इति नलोपः। रज्यति। रज्यते।

Agreed. In the MSS I generally find नकार only. And in the सूत्रपाठ the general rule says नलोप (cf.6.4.23-33).
