Remembering Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati
The lecture series was instituted to honour the luminous
legacy of Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati (1930-2015), one of the modern
era’s greatest teachers of Advaita Vedānta.
Swamiji’s teachings were a rare blend of deep scriptural
mastery and the ability to communicate timeless truths to contemporary minds.
He taught that self-knowledge alone is liberation and that Vedānta is not
merely a philosophy but a way of living with awareness, intelligence, and
compassion.
Beyond teaching, his vision translated into action:
- He
founded and guided the Arsha Vidya Gurukulams, revitalizing
Sanskrit learning and the traditional gurukula system.
- He
also established AIM for Seva, demonstrating that dharma
must be lived through compassionate service by extending education and
healthcare to underprivileged communities across India.
This Memorial Lecture is a celebration of his intellectual
rigour and his compassionate vision, reminding us that beneath the diversity of
practice and belief lies a single coherent foundation.
The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Vishwa Adluri, a
distinguished philosopher and Indologist who currently serves as a Professor of
Philosophy at Hunter College, New York. In his talk, Prof. Adluri will delve
into the Nārāyaṇīya section of the Mahābhārata, arguing that it
provides a unified, coherent, and philosophically rigorous foundation for Hindu
theology. He will explore key concepts like sagunabrahman, bhakti,
and mokṣa , bridging the gap between Upaniṣadic revelation and the itihāsapurāņa
tradition. His scholarship, which combines philological precision and
philosophical depth, echoes Swamiji’s own emphasis on a knowledge-based,
inclusive understanding of Hinduism.
Introducing Prof. Vishwa Adluri
Prof. Adluri is renowned for his groundbreaking work on the Mahābhārata
and the philosophical foundations of Hindu thought. He holds doctorates in both
Philosophy (The New School for Social Research) and Indology (University of
Marburg). His scholarship, which includes collaborations like The Nay
Science and Philology and Criticism, is recognized for its work in
exposing ideological biases in colonial Indology and asserting the dignity of
Indian hermeneutics. Prof. Adluri views the Mahābhārata not as a mythological
epic but as a profound philosophical text encoding the highest expressions of
Hindu theology.
We
look forward to having you join us for this meaningful event.
