नमः to be pronounced as namaha or namah -invitation to join a discussion

                      Let me include Sanskrit in the #SurajitEdits series.

                      The most mispronounced syllable or vowel of consonantal allophone is the                        visarga. Even otherwise learned Sanskrit pundits pronounce अः as 'aha'                                instead of 'ah' [IPA /ɐh/]. नमः becomes नमह and even नमहा!

The point raised by Surajit ji in the post was that नमः cannot be pronounced as "Namaha" but must only be pronounced as "Namah" and that even learned Samskrtam Scholars also make this mistake.

I took the position that it was not so. I presented my arguments. He presented his.

We finally came to the conclusion that it was better if we conducted a proper session with Samskrtam scholars and Grammarians to once and for all put an end to this discussion.

Nityananda Misra ji has already addressed this issue before, I believe, though not on the "namaha" word. The Hindi/North Indian habit/usage is what is influencing Surajit's argument, I think...

Quite a few important points could not be covered in the video discussion on the standard/received pronunciation of visarga because both Nagaraja ji and I had time constraints.

We should have another episode where the phone in Sanskrit and Prakrit versions, ayogavāha, ghoṣa and aghoṣa articulation, interpretations by international linguists, the IPA symbol used for the phoneme, Śikṣā and the Prātiśākhya works, variations — if any — in poetry and prose, etc ought to be covered.

In the meantime, I have run into several credible commentaries that say the practice of elision or carrying the phone of the preceding vowel was a habit developed during the Pali and Prakrit stages.

No, Ramesh Rao ji, I did not get the idea from Hindi alone. I hear priests from across India chanting mantras with the visarga pronounced like the consonant /h/ accompanying the phone of the preceding vowel.
