Hare Krishna.

Respected Vivaj-janas,

I am in want of sanskrit literatures which specifically describe rain
prediction techniques (besides jyotisa considerations) for upcoming
for agriculture purposes.

I have Krishi Parasara, Brihat-samhita and "Sanskrit Vangmaye Krishi
Vijnanam." If you are in knowledge of other literatures it will be
helpful.

Also, even if such practical literatures are not in sanskrit but in
hindi, bengali, telugu, etc. languages it is okay; it will be very
helpful.

I have come to know about "Khanar Vacana" in Bengali (Khana was
Varaha-mihira's wife) but am not able to locate any copies of it. If
someone can help me get this.

Besides this, these texts are difficult to understand because of the
technical terms used which I am not aware of how practically we
implement in our location. For instance, Krishi Parasara says that in
the Krishna paksa of Pausha Masa, if the sky is covered with dust
(dhUlibhih) and western direction is endowed with vidyut-chhaTA then
on the specific day of next year (belonging to this moment in pausha
masa) will be heavy rains. I do not know how to identify when the sky
is told to be covered by dust and what is vidyut-chhaTA. So it becomes
not practical for me.

Thus, if some scholar in this group either technically knows about
these things or is in knowledge of someone who is knowledgeable, then
I would request to put me contact with him so that I can take
guidance.

Thankyou,
Hari Guru Vaisnava das,
damodara das

ps. This email I am writing because today the pausha masa has started
and we have started a small experiment based on pausa-vrishti-laksana
methodology mentioned in Krishi Parasara. If it succeeds then it will
be very helpful for agriculture at our vedic village, as we are trying
for local methods of rain prediction.

Sorry... My mistake....
>> Khana was Varaha-mihira's wife

Read it...
Khana was Varaha Mihira's daughter-in-law.

Namaste Damodara ji,

I hope my PhD work will help you in this regard. Title of my PhD thesis was - 'An Indian perspective regarding the science of weather forecast as described in Sanskrit texts'. You can read my thesis on shodhganga - http://hdl.handle.net/10603/291678

We definitely have rich literature in Sanskrit on weather prediction. I have tried to incorporate all the aspects of this science in my thesis. But, verification of the rules mentioned in the texts is challenging part.

Thank you. Regards.

Hare Krishna,

I came across this book  (haven't read it myself) on Agriculture in Vedic times. The eight chapter of this book talks about "Varśā Vijñān". The book is in Hindi and the link is as follows:

I hope this helps you.

As a member of an ICCR Committee, I had occasion to take a look at
some writings of  Gyula Wojtilla. Here are some pertaining to our agriculture:

There are many who claim to know Vedic Science for predicting or forecasting, climate, weather, rainfall and in fact all aspects of atmospheric sciences and even earthquakes!  If any knowledge or statement  that can be confidently and ethically propagated among lay public, the method and results have to be verified on a quantitative basis. The responsibility for this is on the author himself.  Otherwise it will be similar to the Trump-cure for Covid by somehow injecting sanitisers or disinfectants.
What our ancients have said on natural phenomena can of course be easily listed, read, translated (?) and published. But only after the texts are analysed for their doctrines, technicalities, (paribhaasha), logic and scientific models (not necessarily western) we get something out of them. I have spent a number of years analysing Indian rainfall data on different spatial and temporal scales and also have attempted quantitative and qualitative matching with information available from ancient Sanskrit texts. I will not elaborate here since my works are all published and available on the web. However, in answer to Sri Damodar Das the initiator of this thread, I urge him to read the book Kadambini by Pt.Madhusudan Ojha

More importantly the 45 page English Introduction by a famous meteorologist of yester years Dr.AS Ramanathan (Former DG of IMD) should be read by all interested in the topic. Almost all questions that can be raised about ancient methods on  short range and long range forecasting of rainfall have been discussed. This seems to be a happy convergence of a traditional Sanskrit scholar with a rare analytical approach towards Vedas and classical texts, meeting a modern scientist who was also well versed in Sanskrit learning.
I can send a copy if someone is interested.

Namaste All,

One Mr. S Ramachandran from chennai has developed about 40 Algorithms based on Vedic Literature and past 100 years data to forecast weather, Vedic Meteorology based Weather forecasts and has been publishing every year for India and global. He has achieved about 65-70% accuracy levels. Can download his forecasts for 20221 from https://www.academia.edu/44664955/VEDIC_METEOROLOGY_2021_ANNUAL_WEATHER_FORECAST_For_the_Indian_sub_continent?fbclid=IwAR2nmBGlVseQjvV44dMuEBxYRYyHYSAVIRIaJidM5_9AJnDiA5hwFvUg6wk.

His forecast on the recent Avalanche has come true

IIVS has published it in its World Vedic Calendar 2021 can be bought at https://pages.razorpay.com/worldVedicCalendar2021.

His detailed talk on Vedic Meteorology can be watched at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4Z9KRr9FTo
