There are huge number of possibilities.

It is a good idea to create a research topic bank as part of BVP.

It is better to encourage listing  only intriguing questions  as topics.

A database with fields such as

"Contributor",

"Additional contributors/modifiers/ rectifiers along with suggested modification/rectification",

"The branch of knowledge to which the topic belongs"  ,

"The branches of knowledge that might help in study" ,

"preliminary previous literature",

"suggested reading",

"Expected benefits",

 can be created.

Namaste  Ramachandran Mahadevan

1.     What is the’ prioritized  interest’  of your students  in achieving a research based doctoral award   in this endeavor?

 (a)     Scholarship  (Paanditya)

 (b)   Contribution  ( Shaastra sampat)

(c)    Service to tradition  ( paramparaa )

(d)    Employment qualification acquisition ? (Udyoga-Vrutti –jeevikaa)

2.       If it is interest in  < contributing for scholarship>   and   < pride of traditional  excellence> ,  beyond seeking a ‘ employment position which demands Indian government recognition’, then I have the following suggestions to make and continue this dialogue.

3.      Here below are the topics:

1. Revisit and review of the Colonial translations of Indian traditional writings in Samskrutham. The goal is to  bring out and  tabulate differences in the thought processes and application of research tools in analysis , which has positioned the Samskrutham studies in the current scenario in global academia.

2.  Ab-initio study and analysis of original texts of Samskrutham in the Non-Vedanta /Non-Kavya domains. i.e. Focus on works in the areas of 64 vidyas and upavedas,

3. Writings and  Translations of  ‘ Abrahamic scriptures’   in to Sanskrit in post 1600 C.E – across length and breadth of India.  (Generally referred to as  Missionary Sanskrit works).

4. Re-narration of Samskrutham traditions in regional languages : Writings about socially relevant segments of Shaastra

There is a serious relevance ( beyond a kaala-kshepa model dialogue in glorifying the past)  and need to do research in this area.

The students  and institutions should  be willing to do their part of ‘ Loka-kalyana’  as a ‘Vidya /Rishi Rina’    beyond the ‘ Personal –moksha seeking through the Guru-Gates and grace of institutional heads’.

BVK Sastry

Dear Pavan Kumar,

First of all, your question carries only a subject line, nothing else in the body text. I presume that you intended to join for a research degree. If so, following are some of my comments.
  • For what purpose you want to do research, for knowledge sake or employment? What is your background, Sanskrit or Science? You studied Sanskrit as main language or second language? Do you want to conduct interdisciplinary research in Sanskrit (linguistics, philosophy, vedanta-physics, indigenous medical systems, neurology-yoga etc.)? You wanted your research thesis to submitted in Sanskrit?
  • If your research is purely for academic purpose/knowledge sake, then you have to choose suitable research guides in institutions where research is more encouraged. If you are looking for a research degree linked to employment, then I need not to say anything on this. But one suggestion! For better employment prospects, consider joining for a śikṣāśāstri (B.Ed.) and/or śikṣācārya (M.Ed.) in Sanskrit Vidyapeethas. Still this subject is in demand but the competition is high.
  • As per the higher education system in India, some innovative/interdisciplinary/trans-disciplinary research departments have been started by UGC. You have all options to explore these too, if you are a science student with Sanskrit as second language.
  • Nowadays, almost all academic institutions maintain respective institutional websites. Hope, you are acquainted with search engines, you may explore the research interests of the faculty as per your identified/thrust area. You may lock on one or two institutions and try as per their admission guidelines. You may probably meet respective faculty personally, to discuss things in advance.
  • If you select Vidyapeethas, affiliated/recognized colleges as a research avenue, then you have good chances to interact with the guide in Sanskrit to proceed further. Vidyapeethas facilitate you to submit your thesis in Sanskrit. This does not mean, you can not interact with guides in Sanskrit, in institutions other than the referred!
Long back, Prof. Jagannatha (of this forum) has kindly send the forum a list of topics that can be chosen by the young researchers. Recently, I believe, Dr. Vamsikrishna Ghanapathi has also discussed this issue in a thread. It is possible that I might have missed some other names who have discussed about this issue here. Whatever it is, you may search through the old posts of BVP, pertaining to your question.

Certainly, it is good to create a database of research topics. But śāstra wise, area (interdisciplinary, śikṣāśāstra etc.) wise topics need to be identified. Also, we need to see, whether the topic is meant for a PhD hypothesis or contribute to a general interest. I second Dr. Ramachandran Mahadevan's suggestion.

Namaste.

I just have checked the post of Dr. BVK Sastry.
I appreciate the nice thoughts.

1.     What is the’ prioritized  interest’  of your students  in achieving a research based doctoral award   in this endeavor?

 (a)     Scholarship  (Paanditya)

 (b)   Contribution  ( Shaastra sampat)

(c)    Service to tradition  ( paramparaa )

(d)    Employment qualification acquisition ? (Udyoga-Vrutti –jeevikaa)

Indeed, a serious issue to contemplate and decide on. Gone or the days, when it is believed in 'या विद्या सा मिमुक्तये'. Now the modified version I hear is 'या विद्या सा नियुक्तये' ।

1. Revisit and review of the Colonial translations of Indian traditional writings in Samskrutham. The goal is to  bring out and  tabulate differences in the thought processes and application of research tools in analysis , which has positioned the Samskrutham studies in the current scenario in global academia.

Good idea. Chance to look at the grave distortions by some so-called indologists. People can remedy the affect of 'Wendy Syndrome' etc. Let us root out such 'syndromes' or 'diseases' at its mutative state itself.

4. Re-narration of Samskrutham traditions in regional languages : Writings about socially relevant segments of Shaastra

Can be a worthy study. For instance, one can explore the inherent medical principles in the maxims of vernaculars/ folk cultures.

BVK Sastry

Prasad

And- here is a post on same-
It is posted by Sri Jagannatha on 10-6-2010 on BVP-
{भारतीयविद्वत्परिषत्} Re: PhD Thesis list Compilation
-------------------------------------------------------

The lists of titles of Ph.D thesis with the names of  the guides and

the candidates are available at the websites of the Universities.

I am suggesting here some titles for Ph.D.that can be taken by the
future research candidates.

The  art Avadhaaana or focusing cum concentrating. Its situation in
various  states, particularly Karnataka-Dr. R.Ganesh's marvelous
presentations.

Modern Vedic literature- Maharshi Daivarata.(Chandodarshana)  , Navala
Kishora Kankar(Rashtraveda), and Swami Vedabharati(Chaandasii)

Veda citation traditions- Gurukulas in Kerala, Matturu(Karnataka) and
Mysore.

Madhusudan Ojha’s contribution to Vedic studies.

Sanskrit translations from various languages: Kannada, Tamilu, Telugu,
Malayalam, Gujarathi, Hindi, Bengali - foreign languages like French
and German.

Vishistadvaita-dravida works from the pen of  Prativaadibhayankara
Annangaraachaarya. Magazine-Vaidikamanoharaa.

Sankhya and Hariharananda Vidyaranya.

Saccidaanandendra Saraswathi's  ‘back to  Shankara' movement. His
works on Adhyasabhaashya. Sacchidaanandendra Saraswathi was a  non-
traditional  and rebel scholar of  our times.

Modern Sanskrit works on Vyakarana.

Modern Sannskrit woks on Linguistics.Yubhaatah Bhaaratam prati by
Dr.G.B.Palasule is highlighted.

Vyakarana darshana(Philosophy of Sanskrit grammar) in three
works :Vyakaranadarshana pratima, Vyakaranadarshana piithikaa and
Vyaakaranadarshana bhuumikaa by Raamaajnaapandeya.

Charudevashastri’s ‘Purifying’  Sanskrit usages with uncompromising
firmness.

Advaita works- commentaries  on Advatasiddhi-Narendranatha Bagachi of
Bengal and Narayanabhatta of Sringeri.

Works of refutation and counter refutations: Particularly from Mathas
of southern India-Even though they generate heated arguments, they do
give very useful  scholarly guidances like those of  Anantacharya of
Melukote.

Works of Navinanyaya-Ramanuja Tatacharya

Commentaries of Tarkasangraha- Shaktisanjiivini of Karur Ramashastri
and and Tarkasangrahasarvasva of Kuruganta Ramashastri highlighted

Uttamuru Viraraghavacharya's contributions to various shastras.

Vaakyaarthas(open debates on traditional  lines.)in Navadvipa,
Bangalore, Bhavanagar, Kerala, Andhrapradesha, Kashi, Mithila  and
elsewhere. Vaakyaarthasabhaas in various mathas.

Modern  research works / thesis/ analytical essays  in Sanskrit.

High quality research journals in Sanskrit: Special reference of
Saaraswathii Sushama and Saagarikaa.

Modern commentaries on Shastric works- particularly Navyanyaaya.
Panchalakshanii, Chaturdashalakshanii are highlighted.

Sanskrit Magazines- Some of the  extinct Magazines- Highligting
Sarvagandhaa(Luknow),Vijnanacintamani(Kozikod), Candrika(Pune).

A study of  the works by Shree Krishna Brahmatantra parakalasvami

Sanskrit Lyrics – traditional Sanskrit classical  music- Sadashiva
brahmendra, Swatitirunal so on and so forth.

Post independence Sanskrit literature: Mahakaavyas, Khandakaavyas,
novels, short stories, juvenile literature.

Yakshagaanas in Sanskrit.
Music literature in
Sanskrit.

Bhattashri Mathuranathashastri and his works. Use of metres of  the
languages other  than Sanskrit.

Modern Sanskrit works(pure literature and Shastric)in various states
of our country.

Simply quoting and making remarks(in most of the times, praising) is
not sufficient. Analysis with comparing vast literature and clearly
stating unacceptability of the views of the authors plus minus points
in the literature(diction, intended ideas etc) are expected.

As much as possible the language of the research works  shall be
Samskrta.

Jagannatha.
