When language emerged/evolved, it must have used sounds, the meaning of which were understood intuitively. Because there was nothing to learn from, meanings had to be intuitive - स्वयंभू and स्वयंप्रोक्त. I believe these sounds evolved to become वर्ण. these - वर्ण and its built-in meanings - would have evolved into more complex composite sounds and meanings।
Morphologically पद are derived from धातु and प्रत्यय. The meaning of पद is also derived from the meaning of धातु and प्रत्यय. Sanskrit is special because it claims that all words are derived words. For most word derivation is known with the help of पाणिनि अष्टाध्यायी.
धातु and प्रत्यय are made from वर्ण. If we extend the logic that everything is derived, the meanings of धातु and प्रत्यय must be derived from their constituent वर्ण. In the absence of guidance similar to अष्टाध्यायी and धातु पाठ, we have to decipher rules and वर्ण meanings to understand this process.
Primitive intuitive meanings of वर्ण are no longer self-evident to us today because we have overused language, and intuitive meanings are lost in the clutter. However, because धातु and their meanings are preserved, we can attempt to decipher the intuitive meanings of वर्ण. After that, we can try to arrive at rules for deriving धातुs and their meanings from the meaning of constituent वर्ण.
I am working on this hypothesis and would like to present some interesting possibilities.
