What is the author referring to by the word स्थूलगणितम्? Koshas have not helped. 

Here the entire paragraph.

"ननु शरत्सम्पातस्य संवत्सरारम्भकत्वं मार्गशीर्षमासस्थार्द्राया: संवत्सरारम्भकत्वविरोधीति चेत्।  न । पञ्चसंवत्सरात्मकयुगारम्भे प्राचीनस्थूलगणितप्रकारेण द्वयो: सामरस्यात्। अन्यदा शरत्सम्पात: सौरसंवत्सराम्भक: आर्द्रा चान्द्रसंवत्सरारम्भिकेति सङ्गति:। अस्मिन् पक्षे ब्राह्मणकालमारभ्य वसन्त: संवत्सराम्भकोऽभूदिति समानम्।"

नमो विद्वद्भ्यः

This is something related to सिद्धान्तस्कन्ध , useful in computing the पञ्चाङ्गम्  । We follow प्राचीनपद्धतिपञ्चाङ्गम्  ।

Thee are twelve युगाः in the sixty year cycle starting with प्रभव and ending with क्षय --

युगं भवेत् वत्सरपञ्चकेन युगानि तु द्वादश वर्षषष्ट्याम् -- श्रीपतिः ।

चान्द्रं सौरं च नाक्षत्रं बार्हस्पत्यं च सावनम् -- इति पञ्चमानविभागः ।

Bonus Info --

ज्योतिषं नेत्रमुच्यते -- शिक्षा ।

ज्योतिषामयनं चक्षुः -- पाणिनीयशिक्षा ।

उभयत्र वेदपुरुषस्य इति शेषः ।

If we take the commentaries in different शास्ताणि / दर्शनानि we hardly find any reference to ज्योतिषम् ।

I have seen ten commentaries each in वेदान्त - पूर्वमीमांसा - न्यायवैशेषिके - व्याकरणम्  -- nowhere did I find any serious reference to ज्योतिषम् ।

It is only श्रीहर्ष , in खण्डनखण्डखाद्यम् who refered to ज्योतिषम् and आयुर्वेद ।

 

पाणिनि  earmarked fifty सूत्रs for ज्योतिषम् and one सूत्रम् for सामुद्रिकम् / हस्तसामुद्रिकम्  ( I learnt सामुद्रिकम् , both, in 1972) .

He clearly said that people are running to the houses of सिद्धान्तिs /ज्यौतिषिकs  with horoscopes .

I studied (roughly) two thousand जातकचक्रs between 1977 and 1993 . Study involves offering predictions .

My mother's father (सिद्धान्ती - पञ्चाङ्गप्रणेता)  and brother , both had noted the time of death .

(वराह-) मिहिराचार्य  declares  that the वैयाकरणाः - मीमांसकाः - नैयायिकाः - वैशेषिकाः - वेदान्तिनः had miserably failed in their efforts to cross the ocean of  होरातन्त्र/ होरास्कन्ध  (अ - होरा - त्र) / जातकस्कन्ध and claims that he was compiling the book ब्रुहज्जातकम् for them --

भूयोभिः पटुबुद्धिभिः पटुधियां होराफलज्ञप्तये 

शब्दन्यायसमन्वितेषु बहुशः शास्त्रेषु  दृष्टेश्वपि ।

होरातन्त्रमहार्णवप्रतरणे भग्नोद्यमानामहं

स्वल्पं वृत्तविचित्रमर्थबहुलं शास्त्रप्लवं प्रारभे ॥ 2, बृहज्जातकम् 

ज्ञप्तिः ज्ञानम्  इति प्रौढमनोरमा । उडुपं तु प्लवः कोलः - इत्यमरः ।
