Dear Kushagra Ji,

What a beautiful verse. Reminds me of Bhartr̥hari's Śr̥ṅgāraśataka. I have a question about your use of mugdhvā. From your translation, it seems that you are using it in a causative sense, from mohayati, rather than from muhyati, which is an intransitive verb in my understanding. I wonder how one can get the causative sense from mugdhvā. With best wishes,

Thank you, Professor Deshpande Ji.

I agree that it should not be मुग्ध्वा. I have changed the verse accordingly:

"The foolish poets who are servants of śṛṅgāra and have been blinded by the radiance of the face of their beloved do not pay attention to the pain of the lover. Bought by bribery, they don't even criticise the pitiless role of Cupid. Fie upon those poets, upon Cupid, upon bad poetry, and upon that face of the beloved!"

(Attempting an English translation with hesitation - these statements sound very odd in English)

Dear Kushagra Ji,

What a beautiful poem. English translations are always difficult. "Fie upon" is an expression that probably goes back to Victorian English and is unheard of today. Best wishes,

Those who possess detachment in their hearts do not have any fear of death. Defeating the five-arrowed Cupid, they shine as archers and conquerors of death! Even those, like myself, who are merely adept at destroying the hubris of the beautiful - their poetry reverberates in all directions: “Fie upon the beloved’s face!”

A long time ago, speech was brought by poets through inducement, fear, and coercion to the shores of the ocean full of fish representing sense objects. Therefore, may my  poem, built out of the quality of detachment become a boat to rescue this speech.

Thank you, Dr. Rajaraman Ji and Dr. Ganesh Ji. I only started writing in Sanskrit a few years ago. First shloka in Sanskrit was written on August 17, 2018. Prior to 2018, I used to write in English and Hindi. Your appreciation continues to motivate me!

Dr. Rajaraman Ji, please share the काव्यमीमांसा verse if you have it handy.
