Namasthey,

What is the importance of Keshava  namas in Sandhyavandanam. Achyutha anatha and govinda are used by only vaishnavas. Are there any pictures on how much quantity of water must be taken and the symbols of 24 keshava roopas.

In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka (and I believe Maharashtra as well), Rgvedin and taittirIyaka smArtas also do Acamana with acyuta, ananta and govinda nAma-s.

Dear Madhav,

The pictures of 24 names are given in the blog below:

From your question, I presume that you are looking for the 'udaka-pramANa' while doing Achamana.  As per the various smritis, the pramANa is that of the 'size of single black gram'.  Well, most of the smArtAs use this 'purANa Achamana'.  Yes ! there are variations in certain parts of Tamilnadu. Some chant only 12 names instead of 24.  And, some take 3 sips of udaka by chanting 'namaH" and not 'svAha'.  However, we chant 24 names and initially the udaka-pAna is done with 'svAhA' only.

There are certain rules associated while doing Achamana and it is better to learn these from qualified purohita or vedic teacher.  One should face either East or North while doing Achamana and the posture should be something that of 'kukkuTAsana'.

It has been observed that most of the brahmins are unaware of the Achamana-vidhi and during evening sandhya, they turn West and do the Achamana.  This is a wrong procedure and our Acharya used to scold and used to say that one should do 'sa-chEla snAna' if accidentally performed that way.  One should not do the sound while sipping the udaka; for brAhmaNAs, the udaka should pass through hrudaya to nAbhi sthAna and only then 2nd sip should be done.

So, these aspects should be taken care off while doing sandhyAvandana which should be meticulously followed.  As soon as upanayana is performed, one should be trained in sandhyAvandana, Agni kArya and followed by brahma-yajnA.  Unfortunately, the plight of today's brahmins are deplorable.

sriram

The 12 nama-s and namaha thrice is the Dravida sampradaya of Tamil smarta-s as far as I know. The Andhra sampradaya that you have stated with 24 nama-s and svaha thrice is followed by Telugu and Kannada smarta-s.

You have the details here and many such web pages:

Just search with key words like "Purana Achamanam"

Please consult a Maadhva guru close to where you are living, since interpretations vary from one school of Vedanta to the other.

Here you have Maadhva view of the naama-s:

Some interpretation of ayudhas is attempted here:

Please check with your Maadhva guru how far this is compatible with Maadhva view.

What Sri Madhav ji needs is a guru who is well versed in his sampradaya. I don't know how scholars can help or decide on personal religious practices of different Sampradayas. As has been said before BVP is a list who have scholars but is not a religious organization or a list that can offer advisories on ritual practices that need to be followed by individuals as per their inclinations and traditions they belong to.
Vidyasankarji is absolutely right when he says "

Namaste Madhva Raj,

Do look up https://archive.org/details/sandhybhshyasamu00sand for a collection of bhAShya on Sandhyaavandana. It includes two maadhva bhaashyas. See page 72 in the PDF for pramANa and details on the sequence and points for 'upasparshana'.

As suggested by other members, there are numerous websites / pages, related to vaishnava sampradaya, which give the images you are looking for. (https://vicharavedike.wordpress.com/tag/urdvapundhra/ for example). It is easier to consult a local maTha's acharya for getting this information.

Regards,
Krishna
