Can somebody provide the authentic text of
the famous patriotic song authored by Ravindranath Tagore
viz. Devi Bhuvana-mana-mohini?

Google gives texts varying here and there.
It's only a Sanskrit-knowing Bengali
who perhaps can do justice to the original.

Respected Prof. Kanan ji  Sir,

Pranam !!!

I am immensely happy to come to know that you are searching for the Tagore song -

ayi bhuvana-manomohini maa…

Here is the Bengali version for the Bengalis in the group or who can read and write Bengali -

Now I give here its romanised version, I am afraid I cannot put diacritic marks since in my mobile they are not available. Anyway here I split the words for your convenience. You will understand the words as they are mostly Sanskrit.

ayi bhuvana-manomohini maa,

ayi nirmala-suurya-karojjvala dharanii janaka- janani-jananii.

niila-sindhujala-dhauta-caranatala, anila-vikampita-shyaamala-ancala,

ambara-cumbita-bhaala-himaacala, shubhra-tushaara-kiriitini.

prathama-prabhaata udaya tava gagane, prathama saama-rava tava tapovane,

prathama pracaarita tava vana- bhavane jnaana-dharma kato kaavvya-kaahinii.

cira-kalyaanamayi tumi dhanya desha-videshe vitaricha anna-

Jaahnavii-Yamunas vigalita-karunaa punya-piyuusha-stanna-vaahinii.

ayi bhuvana-manomohini maa.

Being a Bengali I am feeling proud Sir.

Regards,

Professor Dr Soma Basu

Thank you.

Oyi bhubanmonomohini Rabindranath Tagore

The song was presented in chorus and Atul Prasad Sen was among the singers. In his memoir he writes -

... Once the National Conference of the Congress was held in Calcutta. Many dignitaries from different states were present in the occasion. Rabindranath invited them to Jorasanko. Most of the guests were not acquainted with popular form of Bangla language but many knew Sanskrit very well. For this reason he had written a beautiful patriotic song with abundance of Sanskrit words. He had personally taught us the song. Our performance, I still remember, comprised of a large number of singers and musicians, all in whites and Rabindranath himself was our leader. ...

In another incidence the poet had been to Guahati in the year 1919, just after his rejection of the prestigious Knighthood. Satyabhushan Sen in his book 'Gouhatite Rabindranath' has delivered this incidence -

... Rabindranath was welcomed in a morning of the November at the Curzon Hall by the Guahati chapter of Bangiya Sahitya Parishad. The secretary of the council Prof. Ashutosh Chattopadhyay passed him a request, after a few speeches, to sing a song. Rabindranath did try to resist saying -' The request seems to have reached too late. It would have been completely a different issue if it was thirty/thirty-five years back, when this man had a repute as a singer.' But they wouldn't listen, even an enthusiastic member of the organising committee placed a harmonium in front of the poet. He politely refused to use that - 'You won't be able to hear my voice'. And then started this song. It was particularly a memorable experience.

Tagore song ayi bhubanmonomohini

Transliteration in English

Oyi bhubanmonomohini, ma,

Oyi nirmalosurjokarojjalo dharoni   janakojanonijanoni.

Nilosindhujalodhautocharonotalo, anilobikompito-shymalo-anchalo,

Ambarorchumbitobhalohimachalo, subhrotusharokiritini.

Prothamo probhat udayo tabo gagone, prothamo samorabo tabo tapobone,

Prothamo procharito tabo bonobhabone   gyanodharmo kato kaabyokaahini.

Chirokolyanomoyi tumi dhonyo, deshobideshe bitorichho anno –

Jaanhobijomuna bigolito koruna punyopijushostanyobaahini.

Translation of song ayi bhubanmonomohini in English

O' soul-charmer of the universe, mother.

O' earth, washed with bright sunshine,

Mother of all parents.

Blue oceans rinse thy feet,

Wind makes thy green veil to wave,

Sky-kissing white snowy peaks -

Flaunted on your forehead.

Your horizon had seen the first dawn,

Your hermitage had echoed the first chant.

Your exotic abode had been the first paradise -

Having the aroma of knowledge and aesthetics.

Ever-benefactor you oblige -

Providing nutrition to the mass,

Having Yamuna and the Ganges -

Streams of divine elixir, your flowing breast.

- Translated by Anjan Ganguly
