Dear friends,

Sarala Das in the 15th century is credited to have created a full rendering of
the Mahabharata in Odia.  Among his many diversions is the speculation
how Sri Krishna might have been installed as Sri Jagannatha in Puri. This
poetic imagination has become a legend to connect the wooden deity to the
aborigine worship and to create an understanding of the tantric rites.

Odisha is a land of temples and deities, the culture being maintained through
festivals and folk theater.  It is said that the 1st century caves in Bhubaneswar
were apparently used for stage productions.  Public theater and folk lyrics have
been the cultural means of teaching values and ethics from very early times.

I have converted the above Sri Jagannath story to a Jatra which is being
scheduled to be performed open air in the Magha Mela at the poet's birth place.
The poet acknowledges the presiding deity Sarala (an image of Sarasvati)
for his creativity.   The date for the event is February 4.  If any of you wishes to
visit Odisha, you may schedule to be at the event.

The story for the performance was translated by me in an Oxford book twenty
years ago.  Interested scholars may read my chapter in the book compilation
by Ed Bryant of Rutgers University.

I am giving the cover of the new book to be released Feb 4.

Happy New Year.

Dear Mr. Misra & BVP Scholars,
Thanks
Could you perhaps tell us specifically for some authentic abridged renditions of the entire Mahabharat?

Regards,
Aman Mishra

Dear Sri Mishra,
There is nothing "authentic" about old literature.  The Vedas are retained orally
and can be said to be authentic.  The rest are all reconstituted.  Are you into
serious research into the texts?  Publications?
Best regards,
Bijoy Misra
