नमो विद्वद्भ्यः।

The new year starting today is Sobhakrit (शोभकृत्) in South India, but I see it being mentioned as Pingala or Nala in North Indian panchangs.

I know that there is a difference of 13/14 years in the year names due to the difference in the popular calendar followed  (baarhaspatyamaana in North and caandramaana in South).

What I want to know from scholars in North India / Nepal is whether the name of the new year starting today as per the tradition followed by them is Pingala or Nala. It would be interesting to know why this difference of one year is there.

In Nepal,  it is Pingala Samvatsara from today. The difference between various systems is explained by N C Lahiri.  But I forgot the name of the book.

Nirnaya Sindhu names the year after Sobhakrit as Sobhana only, Sir.

There are slight variations in the names, popular in different places.

Not too different from शोभकृत् in Kannada and Telugu lands -- same root in fact.

In Marathi Panchang, “Shobhana“ Samvatsar is mentioned as “Shalivahan Shaka 1945.”

Can some scholar prepare  comparative chart of “Samvatsaras with nos” prevalent in Bharat in various states.

Presently this subject is somewhat head splitting.

Regards.

Shalivahana Shaka number is just Christian era number minus 78.

No, sir.

Christian era begins from 1st January, and from that date till new Shalivahana Shaka begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, it is "Shalivahana Shaka minus 79".

Agreed. The starting date is different.  I should have said that during the Chaitra masa until the end of the Gregorian year, the difference is 78.
