Respected scholars,

In your researches, have you come across, or have you come to know of any not-so-well-known texts (vrittis, bhashyas, etc) on (i) Samkhya, and (ii) Yoga?

I think Samkhya suffers from obscurity, as except for the yuktidipika we do not have any hitherto unknown independent works

And in my opinion Yoga has a dearth of works written by traditional yogis; except for Vijnanabhikshu (who's been translated by TS Rukmani) I do not know of any other practical yogi who has written anything in the nature of a commentary on yogic practices

I am primarily looking for english translations of such texts as my samskrit knowledge is only perfunctory

Kindly guide me in this regard

There is a Yogasutra vṛtti by Sadashiva Brahmendra of about 17CE. He was a yogin himself.

There is an English book   "Science of Mind Control" by  Dr. R. M. Umesh  -
which is the English translation [with explanations/annotations] of the original samkRtam book
"yOgasudhaakara" by Sri Sadashivendra (Sadashiva Brahmendra) Saraswati on patanjali yOga sUtra.  [You may not find this book in public domain]

There is also a work 'Yogatārāvali' of Adi Shankara Bhagavatpada, with English translation, a part of which can be downloaded free here:

Another English book 'Yoga, Enlightenment and Perfection' is available for download here:

Shri Harsha Vardhana-ji,

Three independent texts are available for sA.nkhya:

(a) IshvarakRRiShNa kRRit sA.nkhya-kArikA, (b) tattva-samAsa, and (c) sA.nkhya-sUtra

The first one is the most important treatise and have following six commentaries: 1) mAThara vRRitti, 2) yukti-dIpikA, 3) gauDapAda-bhAShya, 4) jayama.ngala, 5) Vachaspati's sA.nkhya-tattva-kaumudI, and 6) sA.nkhya-chandrikA.

The second one (tattva-samAsa) also have six commentaries by unknown commentators. In any case tattva-samAsa is quite brief.

The third text (sA.nkhya-sUtra) have following commentaries: The most important commentary on the text is viGYAnabhixu's sA.nkhya-pravachana-bhAShya (16thC). Other important commentaries on this text include Anirruddha’s kApila-sA.nkhya-pravachana-vRRitti (15thC), Mahadeva’s vRRitti-sAra (c.1600) and Nagesha’s laghu-sA.nkhya-sUtra-vRRitti.

Translation of vAchaspati's tattva-kaumudi by Gabganath Jha can be found here. However, I would suggest a contemporary reading of kArikA in sA.nkhya-tattva-manorama by Dinanath Pandey. This is an independent interpretation directly based on kArikA but by taking into account (and mostly rejecting) other commentators. You can find it on archive.org

On pAta.njala yoga sUtra-s there are commentaries by vyAsa, vAchaspati, viGYAna-bhixu, and Bhoja. You can find translation of the sUtra-s with vyAsa commentary and notes of others (vAchaspati, bhixu, bhoja) by Dr Ganganath Jha here.

regards,

g

Dear Sir,

Thank you for the book Yoga, Enlightenment and Perfection. I have read it fully, and find in it signs of a honest account of real yogic sadhana.

Is there a way to contact Dr Umesh, for I have not seen his book Science of Mind Control to be available for purchase on the math's website or on any other website.

Let me again convey my appreciation to you for taking the time to respond to my request.

regards
Harsha

Sri Gobind ji,

Thank you for your kind response

I posted this query after having gone through:

(a) Samkhya:

isvarakrishna's samkhyakarika with vachaspatimisra's tattvakaumudi and the bhashya of gaudapada

yuktidipika on the karika

kapila sutras (samkhya) with aniruddha and vijnanabhikshu's commentaries

tattvasamasa, with F max muller's free rendering of it in his six systems, J R Ballantyne's trans. of the kramadipika, and narendra's commentary as well

also I went through Sri Ram Shankar Bhattacya and Gerald F Larson's encyclopedia of indian philosophies vol IV on samkhya which has short summaries of the principal works (most of the later commentaries are mere repetitions, due to a paucity of actual works to comment upon)

My request was more in the nature of a query to find out if any further works have come to light in the course of any research work

For ex, wouldn't it be great if miraculously the sastitantra came to light !!

(b) Yoga sutras:

I have commentaries by Vyasa, vacaspatimisra, sankara, vijnanabhikshu, hariharananda aranya, bhoja and western works such as that of j h woods and latest by e f bryant

for hatha yoga, i have the jyotsna critical edition on the hathapradipika along with the HP 10 chapter version, the gherandasamhita, the siva samhita, the yuktabhavadeva, the dattatreyasastra, the vasisthasamhita, the hathatattvakaumudi and other works whose names i cannot recall right now

I was trying to see if new works have come to light, such as that of the many attributed to gorakshanatha or matsyendranatha

for ex, the hatha yoga project in SOAS is doing a massive translation of some ancient texts

thank you for your kind list of works though, I'll try to procure any that I don't have

with regards

Harsha

Namaste,

A beautiful book called 'योगमार्गप्रकाशिका' by Mahant Yugal Das ji.

...........
.........

Also, I vaguely remember somewhere reading (i think 'yog ank' - Gita Press) by Brahmaleen Udiya Babaji that in Kali Yuga, the mudra called 'शांभवी मुद्रा' is the best which is prescribed for all - irrespective of varNa & kula.  I need to refer that again.

rgs,
sriram

Namaste Harsha Wardhanji,

I'm mentioning this only since it doesn't appear on your list on yoga, although you may be already aware of Adi Shankaracharya's vivaraNa on vyasabhAShya on yogasUtras. There is an English translation by Trevor Legget and another by TS Rukmani, now easily available.

Kind rgds,

Respected Harshavardhan Ji,

"Is there a way to contact Dr Umesh, for I have not seen his book Science of Mind Control to be available for purchase on the math's website or on any other website."

A close well wisher of me is a visitor of Umesh Ji. His observations are below:
"It is impossible to contact Umesh Ji. He only sees persons whom he wants to see."

Myself tried several times through the well wisher at IITM. He meets Umesh ji. He has also categorically rejected the chance to meet Umesh Ji.
Umesh ji moves in Chennai normally like any person. But we cant spot him.
Many have tried different methods to meet him. It ended being unsuccessful. The person known to me, meeting Umesh ji was also very accidental and destiny.

Umesh ji stays in mylapore with his mother. Now he will be around 60+.

For book, found a source online
"Email me at ar...@ee.ucla.edu, and i will send you a scanned copy of the book. It is also available in the Arsha Vidya Kendra library in Sringeri."

Dear Sathya Narayanan ji,

Thank you for your kind response. In this thread, a yahoo mail account's login credentials have been shared by a respected scholar which contains scanned copies of the said book. The mail ID also contains a couple of other books of related interest. You may please peruse.

The information about Sri Umesh is rather interesting. It seems the gentleman has taken to the yogic path in totality. It would not behoove us to disturb his solitary lifestyle. May he continue his sadhana in peace.

with regards
Harsha

Dear Sri Venkata Sriram ji,

Thank you for your kind input. The book seems to be in Hindi, a language I know fully, but have lost touch with for some years. I will read it though.

Regarding sambhavi mudra, it is my opinion that when it comes to yoga, we should keep aside considerations of jati, varna etc because they have outlived their utility. I think mudras and practices are applicable to all. However, which practice one takes up depends upon his/her level of strength and inclination.

You may find much material of interest in Swami Lakshman Joo's writings (mudras and a host of other practices).

with regards
Harsha

Namaste

I attach two images that are screen shots from shodhganga website

http://shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/bitstream/10603/90282/7/07_chapter%202.pdf

which provides a very good list of printed and yet to be printed works on Yogasutra commentaries. I understand that your query is about the English translations of these texts. I hope this list might help refine your search for translations of these texts.

best wishes.
