How do I accurately translate "Blackboard" into Hindi?

Dear members. I am looking for a proper Hindi translation of the term "blackboard" or "chalkboard". Something which conveys the exact meaning in Hindi. Can someone please help me out?

Blackboard is not a board that looks black.  It is a piece of slate which is black in color.
You need factor this in for a meaningful translation.  Some link to writing could also be necessary.

The question was for a translation into Hindi and not Sanskrit. It should be something like 'कालाफलक' .   I resorted to an online English-Hindi dictionary and failed to get a translation for 'board' (what I got was Mandal, samiti, etc.:-) ) Then I gave plank and got phalak... But I think GOI Hindi Dept. or Hindi section of the Education dept of any North Indian state must have a standard Hindi word for this.

Dr. Raghu Vira's Dictionary has coined words for hundreds of new terms,
chiefly basing on Sanskrit. A great effort and a massive dictionary.
Said to have been disliked by Nehru primarily because it was Sanskrit-based.

I think फलक (phalak) is a good translation for board in Hindi.  In Malayalam, we use phalakam in the same sense.  In Malayalam, there is a word "palaka" which means plank. It looks to me that this word palaka is a tadbhava of Sanskrit phalaka.

On another note, I had my primary education till class 4 in Delhi.  After that, my father got transfer to the home state and we all moved to Kerala.  I remember using a wooden plank called "takhti" (तख़्ती) for writing copy.  I think the word is from Urdu/Persian تختی  (takhti).  Everyday I used to paint my takhti white with a special washable paint and when the paint dried, writing my Hindi copy on it with syaahi (ink) and qalam (pen). 

This video shows how one writes on a takhti:


The video says "बीच में दवात खुल जाता था".  Exactly my experience too.  The davaat gets open and the black syaahi (ink) gets spilled over my bag and shirt. 🙂

I think Sanskrit paṭa (पट) means a membrane, cloth, curtain etc.  It could mean screen, but not a board.  In Malayalam, paṭam (പടം) has all the above meanings plus the meaning “picture”.  Additionally pāmpiṉṯe paṭam (പാമ്പിൻറെ പടം) means the skin of a snake.

It also means a tablet. dwArapaTa is the individual pane of a door.

shyAma-paTa is preferable because it is easier to say; shyAma and paTa are both already used in Hindi.

As for connecting the word to writing, even blackboard in English doesn't mean  for writing. Black, and board are compounded and the roodhi meaning is a board used in classroom for writing.

Many journalists even now have said PM Modi uses many Sanskrit words in his speech and he should not do it. They are giving excuse like people will not understand Sanskrit words. Most of the media is controlled by anti Hindu forces including the Hindu newspaper itself.

As someone who grew up in a Hindi-speaking region of India and completed his entire school education in Hindi medium schools, I can attest that the word most commonly heard in 'formal' Hindi for blackboard was 'श्यामपट्ट'. Perhaps there are regional variations and in other parts of India people might be using those words, but I never heard anyone say कृष्णफलक or श्यामफलक. :-)

"Rajpal Hindi Shabdakosha" by Dr. Hardev Bahri (a very prominent name in the field of Hindi lexicography), published by Rajpal & Sons, Delhi (2005), gives 'blackboard' as the meaning for 'श्यामपट्ट'.

The मानक अंग्रेज़ी हिन्दी कोश (Standard English-Hindi Dictionary) by Dr. Satya Prakash and Balbhadra Prasad Mishra, published by Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, Prayag, (1971), gives 'श्यामपट्ट' and 'काला तख़्ता' for 'blackboard'.

One can find numerous examples of usage of श्यामपट्ट (in the sense of blackboard) with a simple Google search. For example, see the 1st line on the 3rd page of the PDF at the link below (a Geometry textbook in Hindi, from NCERT) :

Though the venerable Dr. Raghu Vira gives कृष्णफलक and कृष्णपट्ट for blackboard in his "A Comprehensive English-Hindi Dictionary of Governmental and Educational Words and Phrases", published by "International Academy of Indian Culture" in June 1955,... I suspect those words suffered the same fate as thousands of other new Hindi/Sanskrit words coined by him, and never caught on with the popular usage.

फलक अधिकांशतः  face या surface  के अर्थ में देखा है |

पट अवश्य ही वस्त्र या कपड़े का पर्यायवाची है परंतु 'पट्ट'  का निकट अर्थ plank या board ही है |

पट्ट ही बदलकर पट्टा या पाट हो गया , ऐसा मेरा अनुमान है |
