Respected Scholars,

Namaste. Thanks for the response. If the requested details are not handy,
at least mentioning the number of oriental colleges per state does the job.

Regards,
Prasad

Respected All,

Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, Urdu etc. are considered under the category of oriental languages.
There are some oriental colleges run by state government, or a trust meant for one or more of the above listed languages at various places. Now, the Center for Classical Telugu, University of Hyderabad wants to compile a list of all such colleges, all over India. The center needs the details as given below -

  • College name :
  • Affiliated to:
  • Languages offered:
  • State:
  • Year of establishment (if available):

You are requested to send information if you know any.
Thanks in advance.

With season's greetings,

Sincerely,
Prasad

Namaste.

I think this information is best collected from the Department of Public Instruction of individual States.  In fact there are a number of institutions of this type run by various Mutts.  Several individual Trusts also could be running such pathashalas.

The Chamarajendra Sanskrit College in Bangalore is affiliated to the Karnataka State Government.  It is over a hundred years old.  Sanskrit with several disciplines like Vyakarana is taught here.  There is a similar college in Mysore too.

There is a Shastraposhaka sabha in Andhra Pradesh (Tenali ?).

The Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt is also having its own school in Tamilnadu.
The Madras Sanskrit College is also a very old institution functioning even today teaching Vedanta, pUrva mImAmsA, etc.

By making the search more elaborate and extensive one can get a lot of specific information.  Undoubtedly it is a stupendous task.

Sir,

Namaste. Thanks for your insightful reply.
You may be aware getting information from Govt. departments is not easy, unless it is demanded under RTI.
But still, I'll convey your feeling to the concerned.

Sri Sringeri Saradapeetham, conducts Shastra pareeksha for the aspirants in various Shastras in Tenali. Many eminent scholars are affiliated to the 'Tenali scheme'. Really the scheme is one of the few quality schemes  for Shastra poshana under the aegis of H.H. Bharati Teertha Swamiji. Sri Bhagavatula Anjaneya Sharma coordinates on behalf of the matha. Also, there is another sabha called 'Smatha Pandita Parishad' established by H.H.Kanchi Paramacharya, some three decades ago.

Shastraparampara is still living and pampered because of the noble pledge of dhrma rakshana taken by various mutts like Sringeri, Pejavar, Kanchi and so on, not merely on government efforts. तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ इति स्मरन्

Regards

Madam,

I am afraid, as much as I know, no peetham is offering such courses except publishing discourses in the form of books and CDs.
But one can obviously listen/read some of their discourses at their respective web sites -

Sringeri Mutt: http://www.sringeri.net/category/upadesha-lahari
Kanchi Kamkoti Mutt: http://www.kamakoti.org/newlayout/template/hindudharma.html (one of the best books on sanatana dharma)
Ahobila Mutt: http://www.ahobilamutt.org/us/acharya/upanyasam/upanyasam-ys.asp
Pejavar Mutt: http://www.vishveshavani.com/category/articles/vishwa-sandesha/

Another great site on scholarly discourses in Telugu that consists speaker/subject wise content is - http://pravachanam.com

Chinmaya International Foundation is offering E-Vedanta foundation/advanced courses.
Details are available at http://chinfo.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=107
Dr.Dilip Kumar Rana, Director, can be contact for more details <dire...@chinfo.org>.

I totally agree with your response. A couple of years back, the famous Gouthami Vidyapeetham, Rajahmandry was closed down. It was a place where chatusshastra panditais have taught and produced a gamut of mahamahopadhyayas. Few years back, Sambhashana Sandesha published an article stating that century old Sri Chamrajendra Sanskrit College, Bangalore is facing closure.

If oriental colleges face closures, it is no wonder Departments like Sanskrit in Andhra University are in high alert.

The ugly scene is that politics has vested interests in academics. In such a case, the first and foremost victim is Sanskrit language as it is not coming under the modern defitinion of 'science stream'. Of course, similar issue has been discussed in BVP, sometime ago.

Regards
