It's amusing to note that Swami Satchidanandendra Saraswati ji put the responsibility of the Mulaavidya problem on commentators after Vartikakaara. In this paper this responsibility is shifted to Bhagavan Bhashyakaara Himself! It takes something to write (emphasis added by me):

``I have shown in the above discussion that S ́ankara does not provide an appropriate answer to the questions of causal nature of avidya ̄, the locus of avidya ̄ and keeps shifting his metaphysical and epistemological standpoints conveniently to deflect or parry any philosophical objections to his  position.''

What's even more amusing is that the author doesn't even realise that he is displaying his own avidya.
