New publication : Kashmiri Recension of the Abhijnanshakuntalaa

Namaste  ! I am happy to inform you that the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Delhi has published my critical edition of the Kashmiri Recension of Abhijnanshakuntalam Naatakam  in March 2018. 

This is the fifth and oldest Recension of this drama; it preserves the most authentic text, which is proved by higher criticism at length for the first  time.  

The popular Devnagari Recension of Abhijnanshaakuntalam is a  production of 16th century.  ( which is again a stage version only ! ) But the text, transmitted into the Shaaradaa script, is presenting the text of 7th century.  And it is supported by the Aalamkaarikaas at many places.

This is a wonderful achievement. Before your critical edition, we just had Somadeva Vasudeva's English translation (2006) of the Kashmir recension. 
I listened to your lecture on the issues related to the textual recensions of the Abhijñānaśakuntala at BORI and understood why Kashmir recension was the closest to the original. 

I hope this new publication would replace students' textbooks which are currently based on the Devanāgarī recension. 

Last year, I had to give a brief class presentation on the recensions of the Abhijñānaśakuntala. Your other book on textual criticism of Abhijñānaśakuntala, which you kindly shared with us was extremely helpful for its preparation. I made a brief list of all important editions of the various recensions. I'm sharing that here. 

Kashmir Recension: 

--Roman transcription of Sarada ms published from Germany (from Buhler’s collection)

--S. K. Belvalkar (Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi) No reference to mss.

--The first complete translation: Somadeva Vasudeva’s edition from Clay Sanskrit Library in 2006

(your edition will be added here)

Mithila Recension:

--Based on a ms in Tirhut script with the commentary of Śaṅkara and Narahari 

Published by Ramanath Jha from the Mithila Institute, Darbhanga in 1957

Bengal Recension:

– Oldest editions are based on this recension

– Jone’s translation (1789) is based in this edition

– Most of the old European translations follow this

version

– Sakuntala: an Ancient Drama, Critically Edited in the

Original Sanskrit and Prakrit of the Bengali Recension

by Richard Pischel in 1876.

– Krishnanath Bhattacharya’s commentary (1869) is

based on this edition

– Dilip Kumar Kanjilal (A Reconstruction of

Abhijñānaśakuntala published in 1980 from

Calcutta) argued that Bengal edition is more

authentic providing quotations found in Sanskrit

Respected Prof. Nagaraj ji,
Namaste !

I have downloaded the book by Prof. Romila Thapar & have gone through the same. Thank you for your suggestion. It presents a new direction to analyze a narrative, which may have been retold / reworked upon in different ages by different authors and artists. In the preliminary of the book she says – “ the narrative, I have chosen focuses on a young woman, Shakuntala. That each variant of the story created at different historical period projects her differently, not only allows a historical view on the story, but also introduces a gender perspective.” Her intention is to demonstrate that it is a viable activity ( = area ) which will direct us to many unexplored dimension of both our past and our present. No doubt, this is a commendable approach.
But if I or any textual critic has to say anything regarding this type of study, it would be that, it needs caution – Any literary / cultural / historical criticism ( or study ) should be preceded by “Textual Criticism” . So, whatever has been said by Prof. Romila Thapar is, of course very interesting & thought provoking, but it may be misleading. In the absence of a critical text, any literary / historical study will give you temporary and unsteady results / conclusions. Because a text of Abhijnaana-s’akunatalam ( Ed. By M. R. Kale & S. K. Belvelkar ), which was utilized by her, is not a dependable one!!! ( Those are not critical editions of any recension. )
Till date no-body has full & correct ( i. e. objectively and logically proven ) picture of “a journey of the text” of this drama. For the first time, I have brought out the critical edition of fifth and the oldest Kashmiri recension. During my research work I have suggested the chronological development / creations of all these five recensions. ( According to my findings, Kaashmiri recension comes first, Maithili stands second ( in the time of Chandra Gupta-2 ), third one is Bengali ( 12th century ). Dakshinatya and Deva-nagari recensions, which provides a short and shorter text, come fourth and fifth only 15th & 16th centuries. ) After completing this task, I have also prepared a comparative study of all texts of these five recensions in a very big volume. ( Abhijnaana-shakuntala-naata.kasya panca-ranagaa-vrittayaH. With full texts of all five recensions. Here, any reader will be able to see the chronological changes in words, sentences ( dialogues ), verses, stage-directions, all variants, all omissions, all interpolations, changes in the names of characters, their costumes, make-ups, acting on the stage etc, etc.) After this detailed and meticulous comparative study, I have venture to “Reconstruct” a full text of this drama. “Reconstructed text” means which should be nearer to the original and at least oldest one. So, once again, I would like to say that No Literary study is final, until it is based on Critical edition.

The popular Devnagari Recension of Abhijnanshaakuntalam is a production of 16th century. ( which is again a stage version only ! ) But the text, transmitted into the Shaaradaa script, is presenting the text of 7th century. And it is supported by the Aalamkaarikaas at many places.

The popular Devnagari Recension of Abhijnanshaakuntalam is a production of 16th century. ( which is again a stage version only ! ) But the text, transmitted into the Shaaradaa script, is presenting the text of 7th century. And it is supported by the Aalamkaarikaas at many places.

Prof. Romila Thapar's study ( or any conclusion ) may not be acceptable for a text critic. Because, "Kalidasa's Shakuntala" means what ? Is it that Shakuntala, which is depicted in Devnagari Recension ?, Or Bengali Recension etc. ? If I have to say generally, I can say that Sanskrit teachers, students and Sanskrit loving people does not know that there are five versions of one and same drama, called " Abhijnaana-s'akuntalam". I say sorry, if I am wrong .
During my comparative study of all these five versions, I came to know that - 1. गान्धर्वेण विवाहेन0 ( अंक-3 ) । shloka is not there in Kashmiri recension, 2. This shloka has been interpolated by Maithili recension for the first time !, & followed by other three recensions, 3.In that perticular shloka, Dakshinatya recension has converted the word - मुनिकन्यकाः, in to राजर्षिकन्यकाः । 4. And the king Dushyanta is addressed by Shakuntala as प्रियवयस्य in Kashmiri recension, but Bengali recension has started him to address by the word - महाराज । There are many more differences amoung all these five recensions. So, it is very difficult to arrive at conclusion for " Kalidasa's Shakuntala" !!! इति दिक् ।।

I have downloaded the book by Prof. Romila Thapar & have gone through the same. Thank you for your suggestion. It presents a new direction to analyze a narrative, which may have been  retold / reworked upon in different ages by different authors and artists. In the preliminary of the book she says – “ the narrative, I have chosen focuses on a young woman, Shakuntala. That each variant of the story created at different historical period projects her differently, not only allows a historical view on the story, but also introduces a gender perspective.” Her intention is to demonstrate that it is a viable activity ( = area ) which will direct us to many unexplored dimension of both our past and our present. No doubt, this is a commendable approach.
But  if I or any textual critic has to say anything regarding this type of study,  it would be that, it needs caution – Any literary / cultural / historical criticism ( or study ) should be preceded by “Textual Criticism” . So, whatever has been said by Prof. Romila Thapar is, of course very interesting & thought provoking, but it may be misleading. In the absence of a critical text, any literary / historical study will give you temporary and unsteady results / conclusions. Because a text of Abhijnaana-s’akunatalam ( Ed. By M. R. Kale & S. K. Belvelkar ), which was utilized by her, is not a dependable one!!! ( Those are not critical editions of any recension. )
Till date no-body has full & correct ( i. e. objectively and logically proven ) picture of “a journey of the text” of this drama. For the first time, I have brought out the critical edition of fifth and the oldest Kashmiri recension. During my research work I have suggested the chronological development / creations of all these five recensions. ( According to my findings, Kaashmiri recension comes first, Maithili stands second ( in the time of Chandra Gupta-2 ), third one is Bengali ( 12th century ). Dakshinatya and Deva-nagari recensions, which provides a short and shorter text, come fourth and fifth only 15th  & 16th  centuries. )  After completing this task, I have also prepared a comparative study of all texts of these five recensions in a very big volume. ( Abhijnaana-shakuntala-naata.kasya panca-ranagaa-vrittayaH. With full texts of all five recensions. Here, any reader will be able to see the chronological changes in words, sentences ( dialogues ), verses, stage-directions, all variants, all omissions, all interpolations, changes in the names of characters, their costumes, make-ups, acting on the stage etc, etc.) After this detailed and meticulous  comparative study, I have venture to “Reconstruct” a full text of this drama. “Reconstructed text” means which should be nearer to the original and at least oldest one. So, once again, I would like to say that No Literary study is final, until it is based on Critical edition.
