Dear scholars,

I have a question about names of poets and scholars. A friend once told me that names like 'Kaiyata, Mammata, Ruyyata etc' are Kashmiri. Is that invariably the case?  Also, is the -ta ending a Sanskrit pratyaya?

Much obliged for your comments,

Varun

Yes . These are the names of Scholars from Kashmir . ' कैयटो जैयटात्मजः ’ says कैयट in the beginning of his commentary 'प्रदीप’ on महाभाष्यम् । Footnotes -- 'जैय्यट’ इति अ. पाठः।

We do not find any derivation of such words . 'ट’ is not a प्रत्यय ।

Some names do not conform to गृह्यसूत्रम् --  भट्टोजिदीक्षितः

May be they had had another name -- नक्षत्रनाम -- चू चे चो ल - अश्विनी । पे पो रा रि -- भरणी

The available names are -- व्यवहारनामानि

In all कर्मs they have to use नक्षत्रनाम  only . Different नक्षत्रs have different देवताः -- ’ अग्निर्नः पातु कृत्तिका । नक्षत्रं देवमिन्द्रियम् ’ (नक्षत्रयष्टिः -- कृष्णयजुर्वेदः

I understand that still some people are following the dichotomy of  -- नक्षत्रनाम - व्यवहारनाम

We have given up the संप्रदाय  long ago -- my  जन्मनक्षत्रम्  is  कृत्तिका  -- as per name - शततारा -- गो सा सी सु - शतभिषम्

धन्यो’स्मि

While Nakṣatra-based names are indeed a part of ancient Bhāratīya tradition, the association of Nakṣatra and their Caraṇas with specific syllables is a later development. Originally the Nakṣatra name was based on/derived from the name of the Nakṣatra (or the deity associated with the Nakṣatra). Some examples of names derived from the name of the Nakṣatra are Caitra (“associated with Citrā”, for a boy born under the Citrā Nakṣatra), Rohiṇa or Rauhiṇa (“associated with Rohiṇī”, for a boy born under the Rohiṇī Nakṣatra), Tiṣyarakṣitā (“protected by Tiṣya=Puṣya”, for a girl born under the Puṣya Nakṣatra), etc. The last name was the name of the chief queen of King Aśoka. A famous example of a Nakṣatra name is from the Mahābhārata (Gita Press edition 4.43.16), where Arjuna reveals to Prince Uttara his ten names. Among them, his Nakṣatra name is Phālguna. Arjuna says he is known as Phālguna as he was born under the Uttarā Phalgunī Nakṣatra. As per various Jyotiṣa works, the initial syllables recommended for the Uttarā Phalgunī Nakṣatra are टे टी/टो पा पी, whereas फा, the initial sound of Arjuna’s Nakṣatra name Phālguna, is recommended for the Purvāṣāḍhā Nakṣatra. The fact that Arjuna’s Nakṣatra name was not based on the now-ubiquitous initial sounds associated with the Nakṣatra as per the so-called Avakahaḍācakra but rather derived from the name of the Nakṣatra itself is proof that the system of associating Nakṣatra Pādas and Rāśis with specific initial sounds is of a much later (most likely medieval) origin.

As far as गृह्यसूत्रs are concerned, most Indian names do not conform to them. गृह्यसूत्रs recommend that the name of a son should start with a sonant (घोष व्यञ्जन), have an even number of syllables, have a semi-vowel (अन्तःस्थ व्यञ्जन) in the middle, etc..

In all कर्मs they have to use नक्षत्रनाम  only ---

This point requires elaboration ---

Is it that नक्षत्रनाम is to be employed during all कर्मs ?

Yes . During ग्रहशान्ति , शान्तिहोम , अभिचारहोम etc  one has to mention his नक्षत्रनाम along with his नक्षत्रम् ।

Actually why this dichotomy (द्वैविध्यम्) of name ? What is the logic behind it ?

You use व्यवहारनाम and take care that you do not reveal your नक्षत्रनाम | If your enemy comes to know your नक्षत्रनाम then he may go for an अभिचारहोम against you .
So in order to protect yourself from enemies you require two names .

There is another purpose for the  पट्टिका (नामनक्षत्रपरिज्ञानम्  -- पञ्चाङ्गम् ) -- गो सा सी सु - शतभिषम्  -- one may have names like गोपालः - सामवेदी - सीतापतिः - सुब्रह्मण्यः ।
If one forgets his नक्षत्रम् , he can tell  his name to पुरोहित and the latter would find the जन्मनक्षत्रम् ।
Some people may not like the name given following the पट्टिका - then they will have another name which they like . The पुरोहित (used to) maintain a list of family
members and their जन्मनक्षत्रs .

Only 12/13 शाखs out of 1130 of वेद  are available.  So it is not possible to state - ' it is not there in वेदs ' . It can be known through योगिप्रत्यक्षम्
