Respected scholars,In the Śrīmad Bhagavad Gītā 12th chapter verse 7, the words मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् appear as follows.
भवामि न चिरात्पार्थ मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् ||It seems to me that there is eka-pada-anvaya in the samāsa आवेशितचेतसाम् with the word मयि. But, as far as I know, eka-pada-anvaya in samāsas is an error according to Pāṇinian Vyākaraṇa.
Am I correct? The problem I am having is that the कृदन्त आवेशित is a क्रियावाचकशब्द and has अस्मद् (मयि) as its adhikaraṇa. But मयि is a different pada and thus not a part of the samāsa आवेशितचेतसाम्. And, the samāsa आवेशितचेतसाम् means "those who have absorbed their minds". Now, the sense of मयि आवेशितचेतसाम् is not "Those mind-absorbed people in me". But this is the meaning you get when interpreting मयि and आवेशितचेतसाम् according to Pāṇinian Vyākaraṇa. Whereas, the meaning we want is "Those who have absorbed their minds in me." This meaning can be attained if अस्मद् is a part of the samāsa as मदावेशितचेतसाम्, but this is not what the verse above has. Also, it seems that Bhagavatpāda Ādi Śaṅkarācārya has interpreted मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् as an अलुक् samāsa in his Gītā Bhāṣya, where he says: मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् मयि विश्वरूपे आवेशितं प्रवेशितं समाहितं चेतो येषां ते मय्यावेशितचेतसः तेषाम्। Thus, it seems to me that he interpreted it in this way (aluk samāsa) in order to avoid the fault of eka-padānvaya. Can respected scholars please clarify this point?Śrīmad Rāmānujācārya has not commented on this samāsa in his Gītā Bhāṣya.Śrīpāda Śrīdhara Svāmī seems to also interpret this samāsa as an aluk samāsa in his commentary as follows: एवं मय्यावेशितं चेतो यैस्तेषाम्।Śrī Madhusūdana Sarasvatī also seems to have accepted this interpretation of the samāsa as follows: मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् मयि यथोक्ते आवेशितमेकाग्रतया प्रवेशितं चेतो यैस्तेषाम्Śrīpāda Viśvanātha Cakravartī has not commented on this samāsa in his commentary. However, Śrīpāda Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa seems to acknowledge the problem of eka-padānvaya in this samāsa by explaining it in words that are in the correct samāsa form according to Pāṇinian Vyākaraṇa: तेषां मय्यावेशितचेतसां मदेकानुरक्तमनसां भक्तानाम्Such examples of seeming eka-padānvaya also appear in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. I also thought of some sentences where there is seeming eka-padānvaya:१) भारते लब्धजन्मनां स्वर्गादिकं सुलभं भवति। Is there eka-padānvaya in the samāsa लब्धजन्मनाम् with भारते in the first sentence, त्यक्तदेहानाम् with काश्याम् in the second sentence, and न्यस्तकर्मभिः भगवति in the third sentence?I would like to ask the outstanding scholars in this group to kindly shed light on this topic.Thank you.Yours faithfully,Paras Mehta
