Etymological explanation of the word 'माहिष्मती'?

              Can anyone please tell me the Etymological explanation of the word 'माहिष्मती'?
 I am not aware if this word is a Sanskrit word or not.

नमो विद्वद्भ्यः

माहिष्मती --

मह पूजायाम् - भ्वादिः - महति 

टिषच्  -’अविमह्योः टिषच्” (उणादिः 1-45) - महिषः --  

 ’ तदस्मिन्नस्त्तीति देशे तन्नाम्नि ’ 4-2-66 इति विषये ’ महिषाच्चेति वक्तव्यम्’ (वार्तिकम् , कौमुदी - कुमुदनडवेतसेभ्यो ड्मतुप् 4-2-87 , चातुरर्थिकेषु ) इति ड्मतुप् -- महिषाः अस्मिन् देशे सन्तीति महिष्मान् देशः ।

डित्वसामर्थ्यात् अभस्यपि टेर्लोपः । स्त्रीत्वविवक्षायां ’उगितश्च ’ 4-1-6 इति ङीप् - महिष्मती -- ’प्रज्ञादिभ्यश्च ’ 5-4-48  प्रज्ञादेराकृतिगणत्वात् स्वार्थे अण् -- माहिष्मती नगरी ।
