Dear Colleagues,

I have been using the Sanskrit 2003 unicode Devanagari font for some time, and have noticed that for some characters, the anusvāra almost merges with characters like sign for short "i".  Here are a few sample lines:

Inline image 1
Am I alone in seeing these problems, or is this happening only on Mac computers, and not on Windows?  I have written to Omkarananda Ashram about this and I am hoping to hear from them.
If someone has a solution to this font problem, I would appreciate hearing it.

Dear Rajputji,

I am using the same version of Sanskrit 2003 that you sent with your link.  This is the version of the font from Oct 21, 2014 that is on the website of the Omkarashrama.  It still has the same issues that I explained.  I am wondering if these issues show up on Macs, but not on Windows.

Thanks, Dominik, for sharing this communication from Swami Satchidananda.  If I find time to do it, I will try to modify Sanskrit 2003.  Of all the different fonts I have tried, this one looks and feels the best for Sanskrit.  Best,

Madhav

Dear Madhav,

As far as I can see this is a problem with the font Sanskrit 2003 and it can't be solved without modifying the font  but I think modifying a font is prohibited under copyright law.

In February this year, I was in correspondence with the Omkaranand Ashram about the copyright of Sanskrit 2003.  I was urging them to be more explicit about the freedom of the font.  In their opinion, the font is free for all to use, and they only want to help and serve the world.  Here's what the Swami said:

We do not know about this licensing stuff, but the Sanskrit 2003 font is made available freely to anyone to use.

With kind regards,

Swami Satchidananda

Omkarananda Ashram Himalayas

Muni-ki-reti, Rishikesh, India

I imagine they would be fine with someone modifying the font.  Obviously it would be sensible to give the modified font a slightly different name. And it would be appropriate to return the modifications to the Ashram in case they wish to make a new release themselves in future.

Everything the Ashram said to me makes leads me to believe that they would never dream of taking anyone to court over the font, and that on the contrary, they are glad that people are finding it useful.

Dominik

Dear Colleagues,

I had communicated issues with the font Sanskrit 2003 to Swami Satchidananda of Omkararashram, and to my dilight, he immediately responded and sent me an updated version of this font.  I installed this font on my MacBook this morning, and, yes, it has taken care of the issue of the anusvāra merging with the sign for short "i" as you can see in this sample:

Inline image 1
This can be compared to the previous sample with the older version of the font:

I am grateful to Swamiji for helping me out.  For the benefit of those who are using this font, I have attached the updated font file.  With best wishes,

Unfortunately, I cannot see the "inlined" image.... but I attach what I
can produce on my computer and I cannot see a problem: it is clearly
readable.

Not yet being fully awake this morning, "delight" became "dilight".  Sorry.

Is it possible to type Sanskrit with a Devanagari font using Baraha transliteration scheme in Ubuntu linux?

I have not tried that path.  I use Sanskrit 2003 with Microsoft Word on my MacBook and it seems to produce the desired results.  I like the shapes of characters in Sanskrit 2003 that come close to Nirnayasagara typography.

Yes. Its not exactly Baraha transliteration scheme, but close native support Harvard-Kyoto or itrans.

Hi Everyone,

I am writing this as I am collaborating with a typography expert to create a better version of Sanskrit 2003 free for all with support for light weight and several ligature upgrades. As with any activity of this scale funds are required to be able to keep the project going. If anyone is willing to contribute financially please get in touch with me.

A sample version of the upgraded font is attached below.

Hello Vikram,

This is a wonderful news.  Having done some font-designing myself, I know how time-consuming and complicated this work is.  I hope your effort is successful and produces an improved version of Sanskrit 2003, with light, bold and italic versions.  Please keep us posted about availability of these new versions.  With best wishes,

I may also take this opportunity to request you to design an italics and bold/italics version of the font with necessary changes as respected Sri Madhav Deshpandey ji has mentioned.

Hi Rakesh,

Namaste, Its gives me great pleasure to speak to people regarding this project. I am working with a typography expert Sridhar Murthy from Mudrika to create a light weight of the font. He also proposed to make some corrections to the existing Bold font.

The font along with the glyphs come upto 977 in number. The timeframe for the lighter font is 4 - 6 months. Have attached a proposed sample version of the new light weight. I have had a discussion with the Swamiji who has created the original font, Swami Satchidhananda from Omkarananda Ashram and he has given a green signal to the proposal with the condition that it remains free for everyone. I have obliged to the same and he is excited about the continuity of the project making changes to it. I will be meeting the Swamiji to create a write up and to make it a crowd-sourced initiative. Vyoma Linguistic Labs, M.D has agreed to create a space on their website for people to track the status of the project including the funds collected so far.

It has remained a dream project for me for the last 2 years. I also have a plan to add proper support for Vedic swaras (Rig and Sama) to the typography so that it can be consumed by everyone across digital and print media for everyone.

The proposed quote for the project is 4 Lakhs because of the complexity and the timeframe associated with it. The project will be done in Coreldraw or Adobe Indesign tools which support vector graphics based on my understanding.
I need support on the financial side of things because the sum is too big to consume only from my side. I believe there are provisions for tax rebate for the contribution to the same. I want to appeal to all organizations and individuals local and abroad because of the immense impact the font with light weights will have on the Sanskrit community which can be used in schools, organisations on all media.

Let me know if you need additional information and it would be greatly helpful if you could make any generous contribution for a noble cause and also forward the same to people who will be willing to participate in this endeavour.

Regards,

Regards,

    Vikram

Hi All,

Just wanted to share my progress with the Sanskrit 2003 enhancement project that I am undertaking. The font is taking shape and is coming out well. I would like to post a sample from the light font being created is as attached.

We are way too far behind completion and I need financial assistance. Kindly help me meet the objective for the largest benefit of the community, details of the project are shared in the same thread above.
