Thank you Shri Hari Parshad Dasji, for the links for the books. Is their any way the PDFs  can be converted to better quality B/W PDFs. This will make the reading more comfortable and the MB - size of the PDFs wiil also be reduced.

Thanks again,

Thank you Prof. Deshpande, Ajay Krishna Prabhu, Nakulsinh Gohil ji, Niranjan Saha ji, Prof. Sunil Bhattacharjya and other vidvans who liked and downloaded the book.

Your kind words of encouragement encourage me in my efforts to scan books for the pleasure of the vidvaj-janas.

Sunil ji, my initial plan was to scan in B/W TIFF's in order to reduce the overall size. However, the paper quality on which these sandarbhas were printed was extremely low. Ink on one side of the paper often showed up on the other side. Perhaps these were all printed on Government subsidized paper. I was afraid of even turning pages in these books due to the fact that the pages would tear so easily.

When I scanned as B/W TIFF, the quality came out very poor (see attached image for sample). I did not want to give this quality to the vidvat-samāja. It would be a disservice not only to Sri Jiva Goswami but also to the translator Sri Haridas Shastri. Therefore i decided to go full color, even if it takes more space. The PDF size is slightly greater for today, but after a few years, these sizes will probably be not so great.

I am personally very happy that the most important effort of Sri Haridas Shastriji's life has been preserved for the current and future generations. I hope that he will be pleased with me.

https://smallpdf.com/ helps us to compress pdf file size. I regularly use it and once tried with a 57 MB file and succeeded in getting as low as 10 MB. There might be many more such websites. Congratulations to Sri Hariparshad Ji!

A book is not Scaned twice Sometimes what ones scans may be the only accessible copy of book.

One can see IFLA guidelines here

https://www.ifla.org/files/assets/rare-books-and-manuscripts/rbms-guidelines/guidelines-for-planning-digitization.pdf

Please National Mission for Manuscripts Guideline. The same guidelines can be modified and used for books
http://www.ted.com.vn/TED/2007/Download/Guidelines_for_digitization_of_manuscripts.pdf

It always ideal to scan at 600 DPi color and bind the images together. The images have to be tiff images to keep compression loss at the minimal. Jpg is good for palm leaves as sometimes one may have to use image editor to change contrast or increase visibilaty of scripts. One can optimize pdf using different optimizing techniques provided one has the original scanned images. Simply compressing pdfs will reduce DPi and make the scan quality low. When books are scanned for preservation never mind the size it should be at least 600 DPi color.

One can see what a mess DLI has done for several books using Scan Taylor software indiscriminately. Image curvature is fine but one should not get eye pain while reading online.

What Hari prasadji has done is good keeping in mind the scanner and time at disposal he has.Expecting a lot more rare books from him

Today, downloading a big file may not be a problem. . My laptop  harddrive is 500 GB and new laptops are in the market with 1 TB harddrive. The readabilty is my main concern. If the scan is dark then I don't feel like reading that as there is strain on the eyes.

I also understand that the manuscripts are delicate and have to be very carefully handled. This being the case, is there no way where a photocopy can be rescanned to get a better B/W scan. Kindly excuse me, if this question looks silly to the experts in digitizing manuscripts.

When the original itself from photocopies are of lower quality how can re scanning photo copies help in increasing image quality.
Its best to avoid repeated photocopying . One doesn't get high enough DPI while photocopying that is why its scanned or photographed. Its not a book where one photocopies a chapter and reads. By a book I mean a book where the pages have not turned brittle. If you feel a scan is huge file covert the scan document to images and use Scan Taylor software Scan taylor does compress images to a large extent.

If scanning for archival purposes, that is, to capture the artifactual information of the manuscript I am talking about Palm leaf not printed paper

24-bit, 150 dpi which can lead to file sizes of 3 MB per image
If there 300 leaves then it will around 900 MB

Please see the attachment where there pictures shown

my pranams.

Out of a spirit of reciprocation to the words of encouragement given by the vidvans here, let me say that भारतीयविद्वत्परिषत् is the most productive forum that i have seen on the internet.

The percentage of productive discussions is really good, respect for all members is well maintained and the admins quickly resolve any discussions which are headed in a negative direction. The group is also free of extremities of any sort.

I sincerely thank all the admins and moderators for handling things so nicely. All of you are doing such a wonderful service through this platform. I will definitely try and contribute my bit by uploading scanned books as and when possible.

Thanks for bringing these up.   I taught courses on these when we proposed
digitization at Harvard in the '90s.  Some of the algorithms we created for
real time processing have been incorporated in various digitizing engines.
Mostly they have to do with creating a real time noise filter sensing the background
information and subtracting it out at pixel patterns.  More advanced processing
would involve segmentation and further local processing.  Image compression
through packing was done since memory was expensive those days.
We proceeded to medical, art and music etc.   I am delighted to hear
of the discussion.

Could you please share Harvard experience or papers related digitizing Old books and paper manuscripts. What are the equipment and software they used or is it being done by google books Could you please make a separate thread on this Thanks

Dr. Ajit,

That was 1994.  We created wavelet algorithm to segment and compress.
Pattern matching was done through higher order software like IDL, that
was borrowed from the space programs.  My personal goal was to
bring the specimen resource material to the classroom.  We had to be extra
careful on the lens, light, resolution and bit-packing.  The library system
proceeded to digitize many different scripts like Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew,
Russian etc.  The system was later incorporated into various other scanning
and imaging systems.  I moved on to microscope imaging.  You can check
local CDAC in India who may have developed composite systems.  They
could be in use in various efforts.

I wanted to collect old palm leaf manuscripts in Orissa, but have not
moved on the project.  The local Govt there is not very language-friendly!

Let me not say any further.

Best regards,
BM
