Difference between अर्घ्य and तर्पण

नमस्ते,

In सन्ध्यावन्दनम् whatever may be the practice according to different आचार पद्धति, I see अर्घ्य and तर्पण are part of it.

In our पद्धति, we give अर्घ्य to सूर्य. And तर्पण to संध्या, गायत्री, ब्राह्मी, निमृजी (प्रातःसंध्य), संध्या, सावित्री, रौद्री, निमृजी (माध्याःनिक सन्ध्य), संध्या, सरस्वती, वैष्णवी, निमृजी (सायं सन्ध्य).

My question:
What exactly is the difference between अर्घ्य and तर्पण in terms of why we do it, and how we do it.

Here is the passage from तैत्तिरीयारण्यकम्  , called स्वाध्यायब्राह्मणम् , 2-2 , that explains the purpose of  अर्घ्यम् --

रक्षाग्ंसि ह वा पुरो’नुवाके  तपो’ग्रमतिष्ठन्त तान्प्रजापतिर्वरेणोपामन्त्रयत तानि वरमव्रुणीत आदित्यो नो योद्धा इति तान् प्रजापतिरब्रवीत् योधयध्वमिति  तस्मादुत्तिष्ठन्तग्ं ह वा तानि रक्षाग्ंस्यादित्यं योधयन्ति यावदस्तमन्वगात् तानि ह वा एतानि रक्षाग्ंसि गायत्रियाभिमन्त्रितेनांभसा शाम्यन्ति  तदु ह वा एते ब्रह्मवादिनः पूर्वाभिमुखास्सन्ध्यायां गायत्रियाभिमन्त्रिता आप ऊर्ध्वं विक्षिपन्ति
ता एता आपो वज्रीभूत्वा तानि रक्षाग्ंसि मन्देहारुणे द्वीपे प्रक्षिपन्ति यत्प्रदक्षिणं प्रक्रमन्ति तेन पाप्मानमभिधून्वन्ति उद्यन्तमस्तंयन्तमादित्यमभिध्यायन् कुर्वन्ब्राह्मणो विद्वान् सकलं भद्रमश्नुते’सावादित्यो ब्रह्मेति ब्रह्मैव सन् ब्रह्माप्येति य एवं वेद ।

Long ago राक्षसs performed  terrible  तपस्  - प्रजापति  offered a वर - they asked ' आदित्य should fight with us ' - प्रजापति said - okay , do fight  - due to this reason the राक्षसs fight with आदित्य , right from उदय to अस्तमय ।

वेद offers परिहारोपाय -- these राक्षसs are calmed down by waters powered with गायत्री - therefore the ब्रह्मवादिन्s
, during सन्ध्या , turn to east and throw up waters powered with गायत्री  - those waters become वज्रायुध - toss the
राक्षसs called मन्देहs into अरुणद्वीप -- by performing प्रदक्षिणम्  the पाप can be destroyed .
A विद्वान् - ब्राह्मण , while meditating आदित्य  by chanting ' असावादित्यो ब्रह्म ’ , during उदय and अस्तमय would get 
all auspicious things - being ब्रह्म merges in ब्रह्म ।

This is the reason for the prescription that one , even during अशौच , should do अर्घ्यप्रदान (at least मानसिक) ।

तर्पणम्  means to  satisfy / please a deity  with water .
