I had created a thread by a similar title (in Sanskrit). But that thread has become completely dedicated to the Punyakoti story. Its not the case that I don't like the Punyakoti story. In fact, I like it very much and have been following the development of the animated Sanskrit film for at-least two years. I have listened many times to the recorded songs about Punyakoti in Hindi and Kannada and like both of them very much. I had also liked the story in the Padma purana.

But the matter of interest at hand is a different story about two friends, a tiger-cub and a calf, wherein the tiger-cub's mother preys upon the calf's mother. I first heard this story being played as a recorded song somewhere, in Hindi. On the internet, I have found, till now, two forms of the story. One in a book about folktales of Gondwana. You can read it here. The other is in a book about Kannada folktales (कन्नड लोक कथाएँ in Hindi) by Sahitya Akademi. Link to the book's entry on Google. I just wanted to know what other forms does this story exist in.

There is a small problem with the Punyakoti story in modern times. There is a big Save The Tiger campaign to save tigers from extinction. The population of tigers in the world has become very very small compared to earlier times.

Children seeing the Punyakoti play will think Tiger is a bad villain.

Therefore it is wrong to show the Tiger as a bad animal. When we see Durga Mata riding on tiger will we say She is riding on evil Tiger? No. Then why are we showing Tiger as bad?

Cow is a sacred animal. We must do Goraksha with all our strength. But at the same time it is wrong to think Tiger is a bad animal.

In Modern day many many more cows are killed by Man but not by Tiger.

As a matter of fact I suggest Punyakoti story should be changed. Instead of tiger capturing the cow we should have Yavanas and Mlecchas capturing the cow to eat her. Then cow promises to come back after feeding her calf. When cow comes back keeping her promise she will see the Yavanas and Mlecchas are killed by the Tiger. The Tiger will let her go home. Cow and Tiger both are heroes of the story.

Children watching this will have good opinion of Cow and Tiger.

A similar story (of cow, calf, tigress and her cub) from Thailand (link is here) and Burma (link is here). Finding same story plot from North India, Karnataka, Thailand and Burma seems to suggest that there can be a common source, perhaps in Sanskrit or the older Prakrits. Please help me in finding more information.

Siddhi Kur, a retelling of Vetalapanchavinshatika in Mongolia contains a similar story (of calf, cow, lioness, cub). Read it here. Can someone recall if this story is present in any recession of Vetalapanchavinshatika in Sanskrit?

Also you can read the story told by a woman called Mariamma translated to English here.
